(AP) ? Five political activists in the United Arab Emirates received a presidential pardon on Monday and are to be released from custody just a day after they were convicted of anti-state crimes, their lawyer said.

Attorney Mohammed al-Roken told The Associated Press the public prosecutor's office confirmed President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's pardon. There was no immediate word from the president's office.

The activists, including a prominent blogger and an economics professor, were convicted on Sunday of insulting the UAE's top leadership and endangering national security.

They were sentenced to up to three years in prison by the Gulf country's security court in the capital Abu Dhabi. They had no right to appeal the verdict, which along with the activists' trial has been harshly criticized by international human rights groups.

Among the activists are blogger Ahmed Mansour and economics professor Nasser bin Gaith, who has lectured at Paris' Sorbonne university in Abu Dhabi. Bin Gaith also served as a legal adviser to the UAE's armed forces until he was taken into custody by federal security agents from his Dubai home eight months ago.

The five were arrested in April after signing an online petition demanding political reforms, including free elections for parliament. UAE's current parliament serves as an advisory body and its 40 members are either directly appointed by the ruling sheiks or elected by voters hand-picked by the rulers.

The charges against the five included insulting the country's top leadership, endangering national security, inciting people to protest and urging a boycott of the existing, limited form of elections. The last vote, held in September, was only the second election since the foundation of the UAE 40 years ago.

The UAE has not been hit by the Arab Spring unrest that has spread across much of the rest of the Middle East, including neighboring Bahrain. But the activists' trial appeared to have reflected Abu Dhabi's strategy of snuffing out any sign of dissent that could pose a challenge to the tight political controls in country.

On Sunday, a three-judge panel sentenced Mansour to three years in prison. Bin Gaith and other received two-year jail terms.

The UAE has faced an outcry from rights groups over the trials, which were held in the country's highest court that normally tries terrorism suspects and has no recourse for appeal.

Political activity is severely restricted in the UAE, an oil-rich alliance of seven semiautonomous states, each ruled by a hereditary sheik. There are no official opposition groups in the country and political parties are banned.

Death toll in Indonesian bridge collapse now at 11 (AP)

JAKARTA, Indonesia ? Rescuers say the number of people killed when a bridge collapsed in central Indonesia has climbed to 11, with more than 30 others missing and feared dead.

Sunarbowo Sandi, head of the search-and-rescue team, said Monday some of the victims are believed trapped in buses and cars that crashed into the murky Mahakam river below.

The 770-yard (700-meter) structure ? built to resemble the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco ? collapsed over the weekend after a steel support cable snapped while repair work was being done.

The 10-year-old bridge linked the towns of Tenggarong and Samarinda in East Kalimantan province.

Sandi said so far 11 bodies have been pulled from the muddy waters, but that poor visibility has hampered efforts to locate the 33 still missing.

US awaits release of 3 students held in Egypt (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? Three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo and ordered released by an Egyptian court are in the midst of being processed by authorities there, a U.S. Embassy spokeswoman said Friday.

Katharina Gollner-Sweet, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, told The Associated Press that Derrik Sweeney, Luke Gates and Gregory Porter are being processed for their eventual release one day after a court ordered them released from police custody, according to information from Egyptian officials.

"According to the latest information that the Egyptians gave out they were ordered released in the court but they are in an administrative out-processing stage," Gollner-Sweet said. "We are continuing to provide normal consular services."

The three U.S. college students, who attend the American University in Cairo, were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square on Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

A court in Egypt ordered the release of the students, a lawyer in Philadelphia confirmed Thursday.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a 19-year-old student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said he spoke by phone with Porter, describing the student's demeanor as "calm and measured, demonstrating a maturity well beyond his 19 years."

"He was extremely thankful and appreciative for our efforts and the unconditional support of his mother and father," Simon said.

Porter is from Glenside, Pa., a suburb of Philadelphia.

Sweeney's mother, Joy Sweeney, said she is "absolutely elated" at the news of her 19-year-old son's release.

"I can't wait to give him a huge hug and tell him how much I love him," she said, adding that the news of the court order was the best Thanksgiving gift.

The 21-year-old Gates is a student at Indiana University.

His parents released a statement Thursday through the school, saying they were "extremely happy" to hear that their son would soon be released.

"This has been a difficult situation, and while we are disappointed that he will be held a few days longer to complete administrative procedures related to his release, we're confident he will be home soon," Bill and Sharon Gates wrote.

The State Department released a statement saying it was trying to independently confirm the reports of the students' release.

Earlier Thursday, Egypt officials said the Abdeen Court in Cairo had ordered their release. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media. They did not say when the students would be released.

Joy Sweeney said she wasn't sure when her son, a student at Georgetown University, would be returning to their home in Jefferson City, Mo.

"If he can find his passport (then he'll leave) tomorrow, if not, it won't be until Monday," she said.

She said the U.S. consul general in Egypt, Roberto Powers, recommended that her son leave Egypt as soon as possible.

"He also conveyed that that was what Derrik had conveyed to him that he wanted to do. He was enjoying his experience but (was) ready to be done with it," Sweeney said.

Derrik Sweeney interned for U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., earlier this year. Luetkemeyer's spokesman Paul Sloca, said the congressman is "extremely pleased that he's safe and coming home, especially on Thanksgiving."

Sweeney said she had not prepared for a Thanksgiving celebration, although a friend had taken her some food. She said the idea of a Thanksgiving feast had seemed "absolutely irrelevant" before the news of her son's pending freedom.

Asked what she thought her son would take away from his arrest, Sweeney said she thought he would make something useful of it.

"I'm sure that he'll put a life-lesson learning experience into a positive story," Sweeney said. "He's a writer, he will write about this experience."

India opens door to foreign supermarket chains (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? India threw open its $450 billion retail market to global supermarket giants on Thursday, approving its biggest reform in years that may boost sorely needed investment in Asia's third-largest economy.

The world's largest retail group, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, and its rivals see India's retail sector as one of the last frontier markets, where a burgeoning middle-class still shops at local, family-owned merchants.

Allowing foreign retailers to take stakes of up to 51 percent in supermarkets would attract much needed capital from abroad and ultimately help unclog supply bottlenecks that have kept inflation stubbornly close to a double-digit clip.

Wal-Mart hailed the decision, but said it would take a close look at the fine print to see what the decision entails for its ability to do business in India.

"We believe this is an important first step," said Scott Price, president and chief executive of Walmart Asia in a statement.

Raj Jain, who heads Wal-Mart India, told CNBC TV18 the decision will "redefine the way consumers shop in India, but more importantly, the way supply chains in India run."

Under fire for a slow pace of reform, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's embattled government appears to be slowly shaking off a string of corruption scandals to focus on policy changes long desired by investors.

"This is a very bold move and the economic reforms process is back on track." Rajan Mittal, vice chairman of India's Bharti Enterprises, which is Wal-Mart's partner in that market, told reporters.

Millions of small retail traders vigorously oppose competing with foreign giants, potentially providing a lightning rod for criticism of the ruling Congress party ahead of crucial state elections next year.

Food Minister K.V. Thomas said the government will allow foreign direct investment of up to 51 percent in multi-brand retail - as supermarkets are known in India. It will also raise the cap on foreign investment in single-brand retailing to 100 percent from 51 percent, he added.

The new rules may commit supermarkets to strict local sourcing requirements and minimum investment levels aimed at protecting jobs, according to local media.

A heavyweight member of Singh's coalition government warned on Thursday it unequivocally opposed opening the sector.

The move is politically risky.

Fears of potential job losses could heighten popular anger at the Congress party ahead of key state polls next year that will set the stage for the 2014 general election.

But slowing growth and investment in India, with the rupee currency around historical lows and government finances worsening, may have spurred the government into action.

"Manmohan Singh, after all the scams and the impression of government paralysis, has realised it's time to take some bold steps. This is a very bold step that will please the middle class," said political analyst Amulya Ganguli.

POLITICAL OPPOSITION

India previously allowed 51 percent foreign investment in single-brand retailers and 100 percent for wholesale operations, a policy Wal-Mart and rival Carrefour, among others, had long lobbied to free up further.

"For international retailers, it will open up a $1.6 trillion market growing at 8-9 percent so it's a big business opportunity for all of them," said Thomas Varghese, CEO of Aditya Birla Retail, an Indian supermarket chain.

For Wal-Mart, it's a very big opportunity to reach further abroad, said Moody's senior retail analyst Charles O'Shea.

"There are 1.2 billion people and if you're Wal-Mart, it's a place you need to be," O'Shea said.

Indian retailers have operated supermarket chains in India for years, but their expansion has been hampered by a lack of funding and expertise as well as poor infrastructure, which makes the cold storage of food transported around the country practically impossible.

Political opponents of the proposal, with an eye to the ballot box, argue an influx of foreign players - which could include France's Carrefour and Britain's Tesco Plc - will throw millions of small traders out of work in a sector that is the largest source of employment in India after agriculture.

India's biggest listed company, Reliance Industries, was forced to backtrack on plans in 2007 to open Western-style supermarkets in the state of Uttar Pradesh after huge protests from small traders and political parties.

The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opposes opening up the retail sector, arguing that letting in "foreign players with deep pockets" would bring job losses in both the manufacturing and service sectors.

"Fragmented markets give larger options to the consumers. Consolidated markets make the consumer captive," the BJP's leaders of the upper and lower houses of parliament said in a statement before the decision. "International retail does not create additional markets, it merely displaces (the) existing market."

The Hunger Games Cornucopia vs. The Thanksgiving Cornucopia

www.cambio.com:

One of the scenes we were most excited to see in the trailer for 'The Hunger Games' was in the final seconds of the video where Katniss is lifted into the arena and sees her competitors for the first time in the games, each standing on a pedestal, waiting to jump off and... well, kill her. It's called the cornucopia.

First of 3 arrested US students leaves Egypt (AP)

CAIRO ? The first of three American students arrested during a protest in Cairo has left Egypt, an airport official and an attorney for one of the trio confirmed on Friday.

The three Americans were arrested on the roof of a university building near Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square last Sunday. Officials accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters.

Luke Gates, 21, left Cairo early Saturday morning on a flight to Frankfurt, Germany.

An Egyptian court ordered the release of Gates, along with Derrik Sweeney and Gregory Porter, both 19, on Thursday. All were studying at the American University in Cairo.

The other two are expected to leave on separate flights later Saturday morning, the airport official said. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

Attorney Theodore Simon, who represents Porter, a student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said police escorted the students to the Cairo airport Friday.

"I am pleased and thankful to report that Gregory Porter is in the air. He has departed Egyptian airspace and is on his way home," Simon said later Friday.

Simon did not give an estimate of when Porter would be arriving in the U.S.

Simon said he and Porter's mother both spoke by phone with the student, who is from the Philadelphia suburb of Glenside.

"He clearly conveyed to me ... that he was OK," Simon told the AP.

Joy Sweeney told the AP her son, a 19-year-old Georgetown University student from Jefferson City, Missouri, would fly from Frankfurt to Washington, then on to St. Louis. She said family will meet him when he arrives late Saturday.

"I am ecstatic," Sweeney said Friday. "I can't wait for him to get home tomorrow night. I can't believe he's actually going to get on a plane. It is so wonderful."

The 21-year-old Gates is a student at Indiana University.

Sweeney said she had talked with her son Friday afternoon and "he seemed jubilant."

"He thought he was going to be able to go back to his dorm room and get his stuff," she said. "We said, `No, no, don't get your stuff, we just want you here.'"

She said American University will ship his belongings home.

Sweeney had earlier said she did not prepare a Thanksgiving celebration this week because the idea seemed "absolutely irrelevant" while her son still was being held.

"I'm getting ready to head out and buy turkey and stuffing and all the good fixings so that we can make a good Thanksgiving dinner," she said Friday.

Indiana State Fair Stage Collapse: 48 Victims Sue Sugarland (DISTURBING VIDEO)

INDIANAPOLIS -- Country duo Sugarland was named in a lawsuit filed Tuesday by 44 survivors of the Indiana State Fair stage collapse and family members of four people who died, by far the largest claim yet stemming from the tragedy.

Attorneys representing at least 20 law firms across Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky filed the complaint alleging breach of reasonable care to the victims in Marion Superior Court in Indianapolis.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Sugarland, producers, stage riggers and others associated with the Dec. 13 show. Stage rigging collapsed into spectators following a wind gust of at least 60 mph, killing seven people and injuring more than 40 others. Sugarland had not yet taken the stage when the collapse occurred.

Sugarland's contract specified the act had the final say on whether to cancel the concert due to weather, plaintiff's attorney Mario Massillamany of Logansport said in a news release.

"Unfortunately, this tragedy could have been prevented if the responsible parties had been concerned about the concertgoers that night," Massillamany said.

The contract reached between Sugarland's agent, Creative Artists Agency, and the Indiana State Fair Committee guaranteed the duo $300,500 to perform, $34,500 for sound, lights and catering, and 85 percent of gross box office receipts over $470,000, Massillamany said.

"This is a devastating tragedy that has impacted hundreds of people," plaintiffs' so-counsel Scott Starr said. "It is critical to help the victims pay the medical bills and other financial expenses that they have incurred from this incident."

The plaintiffs include Lisa Hite of Cass County, who was with her 8-year-old custodial granddaughter in the area immediately in front of the stage called "the Sugar Pit."

"The injuries I sustained have left me unable to provide for my family. The financial and emotional strain this has caused has left a lasting impact on my family," said Hite, who is represented by Starr and Massillamany.

Sugarland's publicist didn't immediately return a call Tuesday seeking comment.

The complaint charges that Sugarland and the other entities owed a duty to provide a safe concert environment and use reasonable care in the direction, set-up and supervision of the concert.

The complaint does not name the fair or the state of Indiana among the defendants. They were named separately in at least 40 tort claims filed with the attorney general's office. Indiana law caps the state's liability for damages from the incident at $5 million.

A separate State Fair Remembrance Fund has paid about $564,000 to 28 people, and the remaining $400,000 in the state-administered fund will be paid out on a prorated basis to people who have already received money, State Fair Commission chairman Andre Lacy said Monday. Fair officials said another 28 people applied for aid but were turned down.

At least two other lawsuits on behalf of other victims of the stage collapse have been filed against Sugarland and other defendants.

One cheer for the super committee failure (The Week)

New York ? Sure, the super committee blew it. But maybe now Congress will finally do its job

The last great hope of deficit reduction has ended in failure. The two co-chairs of the so-called "super committee" admitted on Monday that the 12-member panel, evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, could not reach an agreement on how to reduce a ballooning deficit by even a relatively small amount over the next 10 years. Committee members and others spread out over the talk-show universe rushed to blame each other, the president, Grover Norquist, and perhaps even the Greeks. Not today's Greeks, who have even worse debt issues than we do, but the ancient Greeks who first came up with the idea of democracy.

Permit me to offer a qualified cheer for failure.

SEE MORE: The super committee's 'epic' failure: What now?

?

First off, this was hardly the last gasp for deficit reduction. At best, it would have started a process that would have worked through four more Congresses and traversed nine more budgets. Even if this super committee had managed to reach a deal, it would have cut just $1.2 trillion from a projected decade-long $9 trillion in deficits, and then only for one budget. One Congress cannot bind the next on budgets, and each year Congress would have to enact the cuts in the deal in order to keep the deal going.

Instead of throwing our hands up in surrender, we should insist that the full Congress do its job and plan a responsible budget.

SEE MORE: Would Reagan have supported Obama's tax hike?

?

Would that have been good for deficit reduction? Perhaps it would be better, but only incrementally so. Even if future Congresses were inclined to keep the deal, the effect would most likely have been to let those politicians off the hook for doing something about the rest of the deficits. Each year, Congress could pose as fiscally responsible for only having an average deficit of $800 billion rather than $900 billion ? and by the end of the deal, the U.S. national debt would have grown from today's $15 trillion to $23 trillion. Instead of sprinting headlong into fiscal disaster, we would only have slowed to a fast jog.

And the idea that future Congresses would have followed suit is questionable at best. Politicians on Capitol Hill don't want to explain real cuts in programs that people support, as the structure of the committee's mission would have required. The "sequestration" cuts, which are now automatically triggered beginning in 2013, will make those cuts anyway ? but note that they don't take effect until after the next election. The super committee proposals on the table based their spending cuts on the supposed savings from not fighting in Afghanistan, magically treating those as "new" cuts. ?By the time we got any actual deficit reduction this year, the spending cuts would have almost all been imaginary ? and far below anything that would meaningfully reduce the $1.3 trillion deficit projected for this fiscal year.

SEE MORE: 6 people celebrating the super committee's collapse

?

In essence, the super committee structure existed solely to remove responsibility for budgeting decisions from Congress, in an effort to solve only one-tenth of a problem. Tax hikes? Blame the super committee, not Congress. Cuts to domestic programs and defense? Blame the Dirty Dozen, who somehow forced 523 other members of Congress to bend to their will.?

So why didn't this exercise in accountability avoidance work, since everyone had a stake in hiding from these choices? The members of the committee brought their political divisions with them, just as they do on the floor of Congress. In an evenly-divided panel without any blueprint for compromise, that's a fatal flaw. Instead of working through the normal process of having each chamber of Congress develop its own budget plan and using them to form a compromise in a conference committee ? a process that has worked in this country for a very long time ? the super committee turned the process on its head and created a conference committee with no plans to compare and combine. It was a forum that allowed for a lot of wasted time on unserious proposals that might not have passed in either chamber, so it's no surprise that the effort failed entirely.

SEE MORE: The super committee's inevitable failure: Why it's a good thing

?

We have no real reason to mourn the super committee flop. Congress is still in session for the next 14 months before the sequestration cuts take effect. Instead of throwing our hands up in surrender, we should insist that the full Congress do its job and plan a responsible budget. There is also a benefit to this failure; it will be a long time before any Congress can propose another "super committee" to avoid accountability for one of Congress' basic responsibilities. That will be a better for the long-term political health of the nation than the illusory deficit reduction attempted by this low-wattage star chamber for the last three months.

Thanks to iOS 5, some users lose WiFi connectivity

Of all the enhancements to discover in Apple's iOS 5 upgrade, it seems that an unforeseen monster may have snuck its way into the release. We're now reading through a handful of user complaints about losing WiFi after taking the plunge, with most replies mentioning intermittent connectivity and / or a significant loss in signal strength. The issue remains unconfirmed by Apple, but it appears to span across a number of devices, including the iPhone 4S, 4 and 3GS, along with the iPad (and possibly, the iPod Touch). By troubleshooting, one user was able to resolve the problem by reverting to iOS 4.3, then cause it to manifest -- once again -- by upgrading to iOS 5. The recent iOS 5.0.1 update certainly hasn't fixed the matter, either. Could these reports be an unfortunate series of unrelated events, or is there something larger at play? Sound off about your experience with WiFi and iOS 5 in the comments below.

    [Thanks, Iain]

HP releases Q4 2011 earnings: $9.7 billion operating profit for fiscal year

It hasn't been the best year for HP, what with the demise of webOS and the uncertainty surrounding its status as a PC maker. But, Meg Whitman hasn't taken the bridge of a sunken ship, though things are far from peachy keen. HP just posted its Q4 2011 earnings, and the company cleared a healthy $9.7 billion operating profit in 2011, though that's down 10 percent from last year. Total revenue for the quarter was 32.1 billion, a three percent decline from 2010. And, for those wondering just how much the death of webOS cost the company? Turns out that dalliance took a $3.3 billion chunk out of HP's bottom line. So, the news isn't the best for you HP fans, but we'll be listening in on the earnings call later today, so stay tuned for more details. Impatient folks can find plenty more financial figures in the Source link and PR that follow.

Update: CEO Meg Whitman and CFO Cathie Lesjac were on the call, and while specifics were hard to come by, they did let loose a couple hints regarding the company's future direction. Meg once again assured us all that HP and PSG are meant to be together, so the king of PC makers plans to keep its crown. Additionally, both bigwigs stressed that the company will be plowing more of its money in 2012 into R&D to foster "organic innovation" instead of buying it through outside acquisitions. Given the massive case of buyer's remorse HP had this year, that's probably a pretty good idea.

Hawaii can't stop Sacre in loss to No. 22 Gonzaga (AP)

VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? Hawaii coach Gib Arnold took his team all the way to Canada for a game against No. 22 Gonzaga and didn't even stick around to see the finish.

He certainly saw enough of Robert Sacre, though.

Sacre had a successful homecoming north of the border, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead Gonzaga past Hawaii 73-54 on Saturday night.

"(Sacre) is a big, strong presence," said Arnold, who was ejected in the second half. "It's hard to play against a 35-year-old man out there. He looks like he's a 12-year NBA veteran. I'd like to see his birth certificate."

It was a rare appearance in Vancouver for Sacre, a former British Columbia high school star who is in his final season with the Bulldogs. The 22-year-old center is projected as an NBA draft choice and also figures prominently in Canada's rebuilding national team program.

Sacre is trying not to think about his future as he concentrates on helping Gonzaga return to the NCAA tournament. But Arnold figures it's just a matter of time before the big man is playing in the NBA.

"He's a first-round draft pick," Arnold said. "You'll see him on TNT next year because he plays the game right. He plays it physical and he's a very good basketball player."

Shaquille Stokes led Hawaii (1-1) with 17 points.

The game was played before a crowd of 9,687 at Rogers Arena, home of the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. It was the same court the Vancouver Grizzlies used before the NBA team was sold and relocated to Memphis.

Sacre previously played on the floor in a game for Canada against China.

"It was awesome to be just on the Grizzlies' court again," he said. "Vancouver needs (NBA) basketball in this city. It was a bit different to play in front of a crowd that I know everybody. But I treated it just like another game. I did everything like it was another game."

Sacre wanted to show the crowd how much he has improved since he was a teen.

"I was just happy to be on my dream court, where I've always wanted to play," he said. "When I was a little kid, this is where I've always wanted to be and this is where I've always wanted to play."

Gary Bell had 14 points for Gonzaga (3-0) and another Bulldogs player from Canada, Kevin Pangos of Newmarket, Ontario, added 12.

Gonzaga coach Mark Few was happy to see Sacre shine in front of his home crowd, adding his strong play inside helped the Bulldogs grind out a win in a tough, physical game.

"He's done that throughout his career," Few said. "He's unbelievably sound with the way he posts. He posts the right way. He shows his numbers and he's just a big, strong guy to get around. He wears people out."

Pangos got untracked in the second half as he assisted on Sam Dower's jump shot, sank a jumper of his own and then set up Bell for a 3 to put the Zags ahead 45-39.

Stokes responded by making a 3-pointer and two foul shots to pull Hawaii within one, but Bell nailed a 3 and Sacre sank a jumper to give Gonzaga a 50-44 advantage

Gonzaga then went on a 15-8 surge to go up 65-52. Arnold was ejected with just more than 4 minutes left after receiving his second technical for berating officials. Pangos sank both technical free throws to give the Bulldogs a 16-point advantage.

Gonzaga led most of the way, building a 33-27 lead at halftime before pulling away in the second half.

Pangos, who had nine 3-pointers in a win over Washington State on Monday, earned a loud cheer as he sank an early 3. But he was held in check for most of the first half, spending 10 minutes on the bench.

"It was a slow first half," said Pangos, who had three assists and four rebounds. "But I tried to tell myself in the second half and tried to change my mentality."

The 18-year-old freshman, who has been described as a young Steve Nash and appears ticketed for a long tenure with the Canadian national team, played in front of his mother Patty, his aunt and a friend of his father Bill, who is the longtime coach of the York University women's team.

"It was nice to be hearing the national anthem," Pangos said. "It was pretty cool."

Few, who has a strong relationship with area high school coaches and also has another player from Canada, redshirting junior Kelly Olynyk, in his program, said the Bulldogs took a chance by playing a neutral-site game on the West Coast, but suggested he wanted to give Sacre a chance to play at home.

"He means everything to our program," Few said.

The coach said Gonzaga will likely play more games in Vancouver in the future, but he wasn't happy with the hard rims.

"It's a tough gym to shoot the ball in," he said.

Notes: Stokes earned New York City high school player of the year honors last season. ... It was the fourth meeting between Gonzaga and Hawaii. Gonzaga is 3-1 against the Rainbows.

    Rule of Lord

God gave us rights, but He also gave us laws upon which to exercise those rights, and that?s what you ought to do. And, by the way, the law should comport?the laws of this country should comport with that moral vision. Why? Because the law is a teacher. If something is illegal in this country because it is immoral and it is wrong and it is harmful to society, saying that it is illegal and putting a law in place teaches. It?s not just?laws cannot be neutral. There is no neutral, Ron. There is only moral and immoral. And the law has to reflect what is right and good and just for our society.

Dem chairman rebuts White House on detainee policy (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee on Friday faulted the White House and fellow Democrats for mischaracterizing provisions in the defense bill dealing with the handling of suspected terrorists.

In lengthy speeches on the Senate floor, Democrat Carl Levin delivered a point-by-point rebuttal of both the White House's critique of the detainee policy and criticism leveled by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who leads the Senate Intelligence Committee. His comments came a day after the White House threatened to veto the legislation over its requirement to hold captured terrorism suspects in military custody and language limiting the administration's authority to transfer detainees.

"The words in the committee bill are clear," Levin said. "But they should not be exaggerated or misinterpreted."

On Thursday, the White House Office of Management and Budget issued a statement saying it supported the broader defense bill but could not accept any legislation that "challenges or constrains the president's authorities to collect intelligence, incapacitate dangerous terrorists and protect the nation."

Feinstein, one of several Democrats who object to the provisions, said they would impose unnecessary limits on the commander in chief's authority.

A major point of contention is the provision requiring military custody of a suspect deemed to be a member of al-Qaida or its affiliates and involved in plotting or committing attacks on the United States. The administration argues that military custody, rather than civilian, would hamper the FBI and other law enforcement agencies seeking intelligence from suspected terrorists.

Levin repeatedly argued that the administration attacks ignore one element of the provision. He also insisted that the committee revised the bill to address administration demands.

"In fact, it does not mandate military custody and it does not tie the administration's hands, because it includes a national security waiver which allows suspects to be held in civilian custody," Levin said.

Administration officials pointed out that counterterrorism requires split-second decisions that leave no time for worrying about waivers. The administration also insists that lawmakers are trying to limit the military, law enforcement and intelligence agents after they've succeeded in killing Osama bin Laden and Anwar al-Awlaki, delivering two body blows to al-Qaida.

Obama: U.S. must rely more on building instead of buying (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama said on Saturday the United States has relied too much on buying, consuming and amassing debt in the past decade and must now work harder to restore its manufacturing might to spur exports and create jobs.

As Obama wrapped up a nine-day Asia-Pacific tour and headed back to Washington, he used his weekly radio address to tout business deals announced during his trip that he estimated would support nearly 130,000 American jobs and potentially raise U.S. exports by up to $39 billion.

He had cast his travels as a bid to re-engage with the world's fastest-growing region and boost trade ties there, largely to help lift the U.S. economy and curb 9 percent unemployment, regarded as crucial to his 2012 re-election.

But Obama also put some of the onus on the nation to change its ways. "Over the last decade, we became a country that relied too much on what we bought and consumed. We racked up a lot of debt, but we didn't create many jobs at all," Obama said in a speech broadcast after an East Asia summit in Bali.

"If we want an economy that's built to last and built to compete, we have to change that. We have to restore America's manufacturing might, which is what helped us build the largest middle-class in history," Obama said.

It was another example of the tough-love rhetoric Obama has occasionally used with the American public and businesses struggling through hard economic times and as lawmakers in Washington remain gridlocked over U.S. jobs and deficit woes.

While hosting an Asia-Pacific summit in Honolulu last weekend, Obama suggested the United States had been partly to blame for losing ground to China and other competitors for not working harder to attract foreign investment.

"We've been a little bit lazy, I think, over the last couple of decades," Obama said at the time. "We've kind of taken for granted -- well, people will want to come here -- and we aren't out there hungry, selling America and trying to attract new business into America."

Some Republican presidential candidates jumped on those remarks, accusing Obama of calling Americans lazy. But the Democratic president's supporters dismissed that as distorting what he said.

    Google adds 'verbatim' search option

    Google

    By Suzanne Choney

Just weeks ago, Google eliminated its longtime "+" symbol, used to let the search engine know exactly what you're searching for, replacing the plus sign with quotation marks. That resulted in a rebellion by search mavens, but Google is making amends. The plus sign ? competition/confusion with Google+, perhaps? ? is not back. But now, "verbatim" search will do the same thing.

SearchEngineLand.com's Danny Sullivan was among the leading voices lamenting the plus-to-quotation marks change.

I can?t believe Google has done this. I use the + command all the time, especially in an age when more and more, Google constantly reshapes a search based on what it guesses a searcher wants, rather than what they entered.

The functionality is still there, which is a relief. But having to do a search like this:

    mars +landings +failures

    now like this:

mars ?landings? ?failures? is more complicated.

But Google was not keen on bringing "+" back. Google's Corin Anderson, principal engineer for search, said in a blog posting that?users "typed the '+' operator in less than half a percent of all searches, and two thirds of the time, it was used incorrectly."

But because of the outcry, "we?ve received a lot of requests for a more deliberate way to tell Google to search using your exact terms. We?ve been listening," he wrote, and starting now users will be able to do that using verbatim search, which will be rolled out over the next few weeks:

With verbatim turned on, we'll use the literal words you entered without making normal improvements such as

    • making automatic spelling corrections
    • personalizing your search by using information such as sites you?ve visited before
    • including synonyms of your search terms (matching ?car? when you search [automotive])
    • finding results that match similar terms to those in your query (finding results related to ?floral delivery? when you search [flower shops])
    • searching for words with the same stem like ?running? when you?ve typed [run]
    • making some of your terms optional, like ?circa? in [the scarecrow circa 1963]

You can find "verbatim" under ?More search tools? on the left-hand side of Google's search results, as shown in the screenshot above.
