Patterson Becomes Retail Hub | KTXL FOX40

Construction is almost complete on the new Walmart Supercenter on Sperry Rd. in Patterson.

PATTERSON -

In a time where cities are having a tough time keeping businesses around, Patterson is booming.

Construction on the new Walmart Supercenter began in January and is almost complete.

Patterson City Manager, Rod Butler, said the new store is welcome, ?There?s a huge need for general merchandise retail store in Patterson and the whole west side of Stanislaus County.? The next closest Supercenter is in Modesto, which is far for Patterson residents to travel to and why many can?t wait for the store to open.

He also expects residents from surrounding communities to travel to the Patterson store.

?I?ve gotten more questions about, ?When?s Walmart going to be done?? Than any other topic,? said Butler.

The Walmart means more than a new shopping option Butler said it means $550,000-650,000 in sales tax revenue for the city which goes to the general fund and pays for police, fire, parks, and streets.

Even better, it means jobs. About 330 full and part time jobs are being created at the Supercenter, according to Butler. Then there are the 200-300 construction jobs from building the Supercenter, but the work doesn?t end when the Walmart is finished.

The Supercenter has attracted other businesses to the site. Butler said Panda Express and Game Stop are scheduled to move in, and another developer has bought two other store fronts.

Patterson?s growth doesn?t end there.? Down Sperry Rd. construction is happening for Amazon?s one million square foot fulfillment center. It would be the first in northern California and should open in July or August 2013, according to Butler.

Those other businesses will bring hundreds of new jobs and more tax revenue to Patterson as well.

Butler said this is a good time for Patterson, ?(The city is) definitely becoming the commercial retail service hub of not only western Stanislaus county but also northwestern Merced county.?

Matthew Disney and Kate Carroll receive prestigious awards

JUPITER, FL, November 9, 2012 Two chemists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have been selected by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to receive a pair of prestigious awards honoring early-career research in biological and enzyme chemistry. Associate Professors Matthew Disney, PhD, and Kate Carroll, PhD, will be recognized at the fall 2013 ACS symposium, to be held in Indianapolis.

Disney has won the Eli Lilly Award in Biological Chemistry, first awarded in 1934. The award is given to a young scientist under the age of 38 for outstanding research in biological chemistry of unusual merit and independence of thought and originality.

"It is a great honor to have been selected to receive this award," Disney said. "I am still in shock because of the quality of the previous winners, many of whom I have looked up to as standard bearers in my field. This award was granted because of the excellent, dedicated work of our team."

Previous winners of the Eli Lilly Award include TSRI faculty members Nobel laureate Gerald Edelman, Peter G. Schultz and Benjamin Cravatt.

One of the major promises of the human genome project has been to identify and exploit disease-associated genes for therapeutic intervention, but these studies are sparse. The Disney group is working to fill this void by designing therapeutics targeting gene products that are disease-associated from only sequence. In initial applications of this approach, the team has developed compounds to target a variety of genetic abnormalities that cause diseases including myotonic dystrophy, Huntington's disease and cancer.

Carroll has received the Pfizer Award in Enzyme Chemistry, established in 1945. The award, given to an individual under 40 who has accomplished outstanding work in enzyme chemistry, is aimed at stimulating fundamental research in enzyme chemistry.

"I am honored to be selected for this award, which also reflects the outstanding efforts of the graduate and postdoctoral researchers who have been associated with my laboratory," Carroll said. "I am extremely fortunate to work with, and learn from, my wonderful colleagues in chemistry and other programs within The Scripps Research Institute."

Previous Pfizer Award winners include TSRI's Frank Huennekens, Paul Schimmel and Gerald Joyce.

The award recognizes Carroll's pioneering work using the tools of chemistry and biology to elucidate protein cysteine oxidation as a new paradigm for the regulation of cell signaling pathways. Her work has important implications for understanding how post-translational modification, the chemical modification of a protein after its synthesis, affects its function. Her team is also leveraging these discoveries to develop new strategies for treating diseases that have a strong oxidative stress component, including cancer and diabetes.

How to Get Apple Products for Less Money

You may want an iPhone, an iPad, or maybe a new Mac, but Apple products always seem pricier than their competition. Still, if you know a few secrets, you can get yourself a deal.

Apple is a very powerful company. They control the supply chain tightly and don't have rolling sales like other retailers and manufacturers. They also know that their reputation leads to a level of demand that justifies their relatively high prices. But that doesn't mean you have to pay the list price.

The One Day Apple Discounts its Products
Apple regularly discounts its products on Black Friday ? the day after Thanksgiving. Both in store and online, they offer 7-10% off popular items. That's about? $100 off laptops, $40 off the iPad, and $10 off the iPod nano. Best Buy usually discounts its Apple products, just a little more than the company itself. Last year, for example, they offered $45 off the iPad. But even those aren't always the best Black Friday deals for this gear.

Gift Card Deals
This holiday season, don't just look at the straight discounts advertised. Instead, look for gift card deals. Last year, if you bought an iPad at Meijer, they gave you an $80 store gift card with your purchase. If you bought an iPod touch at Toys R Us, they gave you a $50 store card. When you factor that in, these incentives may just save you more than a straight discount.

Student / Teacher Discounts
If you can prove that you are a teacher or a college student, Apple discounts its gear by about 10%. Start by finding the Education Pricing section of their website. Also, between June and September, Apple usually bundles products for students. For example, you might be able to buy a new Mac and get an iPod touch for free.

Older Models
Apple always marks down its products when a new one is announced. As soon as the iPhone 5 was announced, they cut the iPhone 4S from $199 to $99. When the new Macbook Pro came out, the previous model got a $100 discount right away. Sure, you may feel you have to have the latest model, but you also have to ask yourself: did the value to you of the previous model really drop by $100 overnight?

[Related: Is iPad Mini Worth Buying?]

As for year-round discounts, your best bet is buying refurbished from Apple.

Go to the Certified Refurbished section of their website, and find laptops and iPods for about 15% off, iPads for as much as 30% off, and more. Apple certifies these used products have been tested ? and they come with a one-year warranty.

Other Online Outlets
Sites like Amazon and Macmall offer everyday low prices that may end up beating other deals simply because they don't include sales tax. So be sure to factor that into your decision making.

'Unneeded' National Guard Aircraft Starring in Hurricane Sandy Response

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Two different aircraft the Pentagon says the nation no longer needs, but National Guard leaders and elected officials are fighting to keep in the Guard fleet, are playing a prominent role in the response to Hurricane Sandy.

One Florida Army Guard C-23 Sherpa delivered 6,500 pounds of Meals Ready to Eat from Fort Belvoir, Va., to Farmingdale, N.Y., over the weekend. And Monday, it transported disaster response experts from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to New Jersey.

Meanwhile, C-27J Spartan aircraft and crews from the Maryland, Mississippi and Ohio Air National Guard have been transporting personnel and equipment to New York.

The C-23 and C-27J are small fixed-wing cargo planes capable of landing on runways that may prohibit other military aircraft. The C-23 has been in the Guard for more than 20 years; the C-27J for two years. Both also have seen duty overseas, where they have been praised for their flexibility, reliability and cost-efficiency.

Yet both are on the Pentagon chopping block.

The Army is scheduled this month to take both of the Florida Army Guard's C-23s and two aircraft from the Texas Army Guard. And the Air Force planned to divest the C-27J in its fiscal 2013 budget request.

Congress thought it put those plans on hold in the continuing resolution that currently funds the federal government through the end of March, but the Army is moving forward with its plans.

"This is a case where the Pentagon simply doesn't like small cargo aircraft, even if they demonstrate their value to the nation every time out," said retired Maj. Gen. Gus L. Hargett Jr., the president of the National Guard Association of the United States.

"The Army and the Air Force say these planes are unneeded, but there are thousands of ground troops who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan who would disagree, and now, so would tens of thousands of people in New Jersey and New York," he added. "But the Pentagon remains determined."

The Army's determination has caught the attention of the governors of Florida and Texas and some lawmakers.

Gov. Rick Scott, R-Fla., and Gov. Rick Perry, R-Texas, wrote President Barack Obama on Oct. 11 asking him to intervene.

In Congress, Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., is asking colleagues to sign a letter to Army Secretary John McHugh requesting his "commitment to ensure that the C-23 fleet remains operational until a viable alternative is identified."

Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and co-chair of the House National Guard and Reserve Components Caucus, is asking that the letter be signed and delivered to McHugh this week.

The Florida Army Guard Sherpa supporting Sandy relief flew missions in Iraq in 2004, 2007 and 2010. It also saw action during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, taking Florida Fish and Wildlife experts over the beaches of Florida's panhandle to spot encroaching oil slicks.

"We love supporting missions, especially when it is a humanitarian mission," said Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Langlois, who is monitoring the Sherpa mission from its unit's base in Brooksville, Fla., according to a Florida Guard release issued Monday.

About NGAUS: The association includes nearly 45,000 current or former Guard officers. It was created in 1878 to provide unified representation in Washington. In their first productive meeting after Reconstruction, militia officers from the North and South formed the association with the goal of obtaining better equipment and training by educating Congress on militia needs. Today, 134 years later, the militia is known as the National Guard, but NGAUS has the same mission.

?

When was the last time you saw an interest rate above 6 percent? In the last three years, interest rates have steadily declined from?one record low to the next. Before the 2000s however, interest rates scaled much higher. While the shock of record low interests may have ebbed, we wanted to explore the history of interest rates to better understand the unprecedented yet very promising situation of the current housing market.

?

Before 2003, interest rates hadn?t dipped?below 6 percent since the 1960s. For most of the late 1960s and 1970s, interest rates hovered between 7 and 9 percent. Then, starting in 1980, interest rates skyrocketed to record heights, touching 18.45 percent in October 1981. During the 1990s and early 2000s, rates went back to about 9 percent. However, since 2003, rates have been steadily falling. By historical comparison, today?s rates are incredibly low, clocking in around 3 percent. Here?s a?snapshot of annual average interest rates?over the past decade:

According to the Wall Street Journal, the trend of falling interest rates leads to reduced costs for homebuyers, giving a lift to the housing market. ?A general rule of thumb holds that every one percentage point decline in mortgage rates is the equivalent of roughly a 10 percent reduction in the home price for the buyer,? reported the Journal in 2010.?

?

New record lows seen in 2012 may impact homeowners who are looking to cut down on monthly mortgage payments. By refinancing at a rate just one-percentage point lower, a homeowner with a $400,000 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage can shave off at least $250 from their monthly payment. For first-time buyers or vacation home buyers, the current rates may allow them to afford a larger home or a home with extra features, like a swimming pool or a fenced-in backyard.?

?

If there?s anything the historical record shows us, it?s that mortgage rates don?t last forever. Today?s lows will one day seem unfathomable, and families who had the keen foresight to take advantage of record low interest rates will reap big savings over the course of a 15 or 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.

A History of Interest Rates ? Now is the time to refinance if you have not already or move-up to that dream home.

CBN's quest for retention of absolute power

IN what appears to be a well-choreographed script, the airwaves and the print media have lately been inundated with affirmations and endorsements of the absolute powers currently enjoyed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, under the provisions of the 2007 CBN Act.

The media reports were primarily culled from the recent presentations by various stakeholders at the hearings of the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Banking and Finance and Justice.? The summary of all the presentations, including those of the seemingly passionate pleas of two former CBN Governors, was that it was inappropriate to tamper with the existing provisions in the 2007 Act.

The appellants also maintained that the content of the present Act was in consonance with international best practice; an elder statesman who had earlier served as CBN boss also cautioned that our CBN Governor would lose respect amongst international peers if the Act is amended.? A vice president of the NLC similarly challenged the legislators for proposing to deprive the CBN of its independence, while the House cherished the constitutional guarantee of its own independence.

The CBN on its side also maintained that the amendments would fuel inflation and also obstruct the bank?s ability to quickly respond to evolving market threats.

The apex bank also claimed that the CBN?s ability to deliver its core mandate of price stability (i.e. reduce inflation to 1 ? 2% and create an enabling economic environment) will be compromised if the Act, as its currently stands, is amended in any way.

From the foregoing, the proposed amendments may seem purely self-serving.? Some critics have even suggested that the proposed amendment was a devious route to enthrone mediocrity and create opportunity for leakages in the management of the apex bank.? Other critics also insinuated that the proposed amendment to the Act was the Legislators? payback for Sanusi?s impetuous revelations on the lavish appetite of members of the House.

Surprisingly, this writer?s brief presentation appeared to be the lone voice in the wilderness, which supported the proposed amendments.

Consequently, it may be appropriate to actually evaluate the quality of each of the five amendments proposed by the House.? In reality, the amendment covers less than two pages and relates to just two sub-sections under Sections 6, 7, and 8 respectively, and also includes the introduction of a new Section 48.? Incidentally, the existing 2007 CBN Act contains 90 pages and 54 Sections!

The proposed amendments relate to Board composition, budget preparation, budget approval, salary and appointment of a Deputy in case of absence of the Governor.

The 2007 Act provides for 12 board members with the incumbent Governor as Chairman, while the other members of the Board consist of four Deputy Governors of CBN, fiveDirectors of CBN, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Finance, and the federation?s Accountant General.? The preponderance of 10 CBN officers out of 12 board members clearly negates the principle of accountability and transparency as the aberrant judgement of an anti-people and bellicose Governor will effectively become board policy.? Ultimately, Nigerians will become the victims of the impact of such misjudgment.

The anti-people positioning of CBN?s management in such national issues as the fuel subsidy imbroglio, and the poorly thought-out proposal for the introduction of the N5,000 note are all reminders of such misjudgements; the inexplicable and arbitrary Father Christmas largesse of the CBN Governor has also raised concern.? Fortunately, the National Assembly has belatedly recently woken up from its slumber while the CBN usurped the legislative powers for approval of national debt accumulation; the erstwhile lacuna permitted the CBN and its associate agencies (Debt Management Office and AMCON) to rapidly accumulate over N8 trillion (about US$48 billion) debt for largely unsubstantiated purposes while the legislators snoozed!!? In view of the N100bn annual sinking fund for debt repayment in the 2013 budget proposal, it may take over 60 years to repay these loans.

Incidentally, the Commander-in-Chief, President Jonathan, cannot spend a single kobo or borrow on behalf of Nigeria without prior approval of the legislature.? It is bewildering, therefore, that the CBN Governor and its Board have such sweeping and unfettered powers as unelected civil servants under the existing 2007 Act!

Such absolute powers would corrupt even the most righteous human being and the House has consequently recommended that Section 6(2) of the Act be amended by providing that ?the CBN Board shall consist of a chairman, who shall be either a former CBN governor or a former chairman or managing director of a bank.? The other members of the proposed new seven-man Board would consist of the (incumbent) CBN Governor, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry? of Finance, the Accountant General of the Federation, the Permanent Secretary of the National Planning Commission, a representative of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (not below the rank of a director) and a representative of the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (not below the rank of a Director).?? Contrary to speculation, there is no political appointee on the Board!

The second proposed amendment to the 2007 Act relates to Section 6(3)a, which vests responsibility for budget preparation on the CBN and approval of same budget by a lopsided Board with 10 CBN staff out of the 12-man membership. ?In view of the ambience of impunity in our political and economic space, it would be a miracle to expect such arrangement to be free from the pervasive magnitude of fraud in our public administration.? The proposed amendment consequently correctly deletes the existing provision for the CBN?s Board as the sole authority to approve the apex bank?s annual budget.

Some critics have observed that it is the fear of the revelation of the putrid mess in the system that has induced CBN?s orchestrated campaign for the retention of its absolute powers.

The House amendment consequently introduces a new Section 48, which provides that ?the Board shall prepare and submit to the National Assembly through the President not later than 30th September of each year, an estimate of its income and expenditure during the next succeeding year.?? This amendment would certainly be more transparent and would also demand greater accountability in the management of the apex bank.?

The fourth amendment pertains to the leadership of the Board in the event of absence of the Governor.? Section 7(1) in the current 2007 Act stipulates that the CBN Governor would personally choose the candidate to act on his behalf in case of unavoidable absence.? The proposed amendment replaces the provision in Section 7(1) as follows:

?The Governor, or in his absence the most Senior Deputy Governor, shall be in charge of the day-to-day management of the Bank and shall be answerable to the Board for his acts and decisions.?

The fifth and final amendment to the 2007 Act, relates to Section 8(3), which currently provides that salaries and allowances will be solely determined by the current 12-man Board with its its complement of 10 CBN?s staff!? The current amendment, however, provides as follows:

?The salaries or allowances, including pension and other allowances payable to the governor and the deputy governor shall be as stipulated from time to time by the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, subject to the approval of the President.?

Fellow Nigerians, please judge for yourselves who really is being clever by half.? It appears that the CBN is mischievously capitalising on the burden of credibility of members of the National Assembly.? In any event, we have endured CBN?s promises of the dividends of absolute autonomy since 2007; regrettably, the product of our forbearance is increasing debt accumulation and deepening poverty nationwide in spite of increasing revenue inflow!

Instructively, however, even the adoption of the proposed amendments may not bring succour to our blighted economy, if the reconstituted Board encourages the CBN to continue to maintain its monopoly on the foreign exchange market under the amended Act!

Save the Naira, save Nigerians!!

George Lucas' filmmaking rooted in rebellion

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? There's no mistaking the similarities. A childhood on a dusty farm, a love of fast vehicles, a rebel who battles an overpowering empire ? George Lucas is the hero he created, Luke Skywalker.

His filmmaking outpost, Skywalker Ranch, is so far removed from the Hollywood moviemaking machine he once despised, that it may as well be on the forest moon of Endor.

That's why this week's announcement that Lucas is selling the "Star Wars" franchise and the entire Lucasfilm business to The Walt Disney Co. for more than $4 billion is like a laser blast from outer space.

Lucas built his film operation in Marin County near San Francisco largely to avoid the meddling of Los Angeles-based studios. His aim was to finish the "Star Wars" series? his way.

Today the enterprise has far surpassed the 68-year-old filmmaker's original goals. The ranch covers 6,100 acres and houses one of the industry's most acclaimed visual effects companies, Industrial Light & Magic. Lucasfilm, with its headquarters now in San Francisco proper, has ventured into books, video games, merchandise, special effects and marketing. Just as Anakin Skywalker became the villain Darth Vader, Lucas ?once the outsider? had grown to become the leader of an empire.

"What I was trying to do was stay independent so that I could make the movies I wanted to make," Lucas says in the 2004 documentary "Empire of Dreams." ''But now I've found myself being the head of a corporation ... I have become the very thing that I was trying to avoid."

After the blockbuster sale announcement Tuesday, Lucas expressed a desire to give away much of his fortune, donate to educational causes and return to the experimental filmmaking of his youth. Still, the move stunned those who've followed him. He'd contemplated retirement for years and said he'd never make another "Star Wars" film.

Dale Pollock, the author of the 1999 biography "Skywalking," said Lucas disdained the Disney culture in interviews he gave in the 1980s, even though he admired the company's founder. "He felt the corporate 'Disneyization' had destroyed the spirit of Walt," Pollock said.

Lucas said through a spokeswoman on Saturday that he never said such a thing. But his anti-corporate streak is renowned. In the Lucasfilm-sanctioned documentary "Empire of Dreams", Lucas says on camera that he is "not happy that corporations have taken over the film industry."

Growing up in the central California town of Modesto, the independent streak was strong in young Lucas. The family lived on a walnut ranch and Lucas' father owned a stationery store. But, like his fictional protege Luke, George had no interest in taking over the family business. Lucas and his father fought when George made it clear that he'd rather go to college to study art than follow in his father's footsteps.

Lucas loved fast cars, and dreamed that racing them would be his ticket out. A near-fatal car crash the day before his high school graduation convinced him otherwise.

"I decided I'd better settle down and go to school," he told sci-fi magazine Starlog in 1981.

As a film student at the University of Southern California, he experimented with "cinema verite," a provocative form of documentary, and "tone poems" that visualized a piece of music or other artistic work.

The style is reflected in some of the short films he made at USC: "1:42:08" focused on the sound of a Lotus race car's engine driving at full speed and "Anyone Who Lived in a Pretty How Town," inspired by an e.e. Cummings poem. In later interviews, Lucas described his early films as "visual exercises."

Lucas' intellectual explorations led to an interest in anthropology, especially the work of American mythologist Joseph Campbell, who studied the common thread linking the myths of disparate cultures. This inspired Lucas to explore archetypal storylines that resonated across the ages and around the world.

Lucas' epic battle with the movie industry began after Warner Bros. forced him to make unwanted changes to an early film, "THX 1138." Later, Universal Pictures insisted on revisions to "American Graffiti" that Lucas felt impinged on his creative freedom. The experience led Lucas to insist on having total control of all his work, just like Charlie Chaplin and Walt Disney in their heyday.

"In order to get my vision out there, I really needed to learn how to manipulate the system because the system is designed to tear you down and destroy everything you are doing," Lucas said in an interview with Charlie Rose.

He shopped his outline for "Star Wars" to several studios before finding a friend in Alan Ladd Jr., an executive at 20th Century Fox. Despite budget and deadline overruns, and pressure from the studio, the movie was a huge success when it was released in 1977. It grossed $798 million in theaters worldwide and caused Fox's stock price at the time to double.

In one of the wisest business moves in Hollywood history, Lucas cut a deal with distributor Fox before the film's release so that he could retain ownership of the sequels and rights for merchandise. He figured in the 1970s that might mean peddling a few T-shirts and posters to fans to help market the movie. Over the decades, merchandising has formed the bedrock of his multi-billion-dollar enterprise, resulting in a bonanza for Lucas from action figures, toys, spinoff books and other products.

Industrial Light & Magic, the unit he started in a makeshift space in the Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys, moved to the ranch in northern California and lent its prowess to other movies. It broke ground using computers, motion-controlled cameras, models and masks. Its reach is breathtaking, notably among the biggest science fiction movies of the 1980s: "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial," ''Poltergeist," ''Back to the Future," ''Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark," ''Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" and more.

"Between him and (Steven) Spielberg, they changed how movies got made," said Matt Atchity, editor-in-chief of movie review website Rotten Tomatoes.

These days, the talent at ILM has spread around the globe, and many former employees have become top executives at other special effects companies, said Chris DeFaria, executive vice president of digital production at Warner Bros.

"You meet anybody who's a significant executive or artist at a company, they've spent their time at ILM or got their start there. That's probably one of George's greatest gifts to the business," DeFaria said.

Lucas helped make the tools that were needed for his films. ILM developed the world's first computerized film editing and music mixing technology, revolutionizing what had been a cut-and-splice affair. Pixar, the imaging computer he founded as a division of Lucasfilm, became a world-famous animated movie company. Apple's Steve Jobs bought and later sold it to Disney in 2006.

But the goliath Lucas created began to weigh on him. Fans-turned-critics felt the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy he directed fell short of the first films. Others believed his revisions to the re-released classics undid some of what made the first movies great.

Giving up his role at the head of Lucasfilm may shield him from the fury of rebellious fans and critics. He said in a video released by Disney that the sale would allow him to "do other things, things in philanthropy and doing more experimental kind of films."

"I couldn't really drag my company into that."

Still, Lucas is not planning on going to a galaxy far, far away.

Speaking on Friday night at Ebony magazine's Power 100 event in New York, Lucas said: "It's 40 years of work and it's been my life, but I'm ready to move on to bigger and better things. I have a foundation, an educational foundation. I do a lot of work with education, and I'm very excited about doing that."

This week he assured the incoming president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy that he'd be around to advise her on future "Star Wars" movies ?just like the apparition of Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi helps Luke through his adventures.

"They're finishing the hologram now," he told Kennedy. "Don't worry."

Romney, Obama converge on Iowa in late scramble for votes

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Reuters) - The U.S. presidential race, which has hinged for months on a handful of states, converged on one city in Iowa on Saturday as President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney each made a last-minute appeal for support before Tuesday's election.

With the race in a dead heat nationally, both candidates touched down briefly in Dubuque, a Mississippi River city of 58,000 people, as they sprinted across the country in a bid to secure any possible advantage before Election Day.

In an airport rally early in the afternoon, Romney urged supporters to try to sway friends and neighbors who back Obama. He said he would reach out to Democrats as well if elected - a stance that could appeal to independent voters who have little stomach for partisan gridlock.

"I want you to reach across the street to the neighbor, who has that other sign in his front yard. And I'm going to reach across the aisle in Washington, D.C., to the politicians who are working for the other candidate," Romney told about 2,000 people.

Six hours later, Obama reminded about 5,000 people in a park in downtown Dubuque that he had started his first presidential bid in Iowa in 2007, and highlighted successes of his time in office, such as ending the war in Iraq and expanding access to healthcare.

"After two years of campaigning and after four years as president, you know me by now. You may not agree with every decision I made, you may have sometimes been frustrated with the pace of change. But you know that I say what I mean and I mean what I say," Obama said.

Earlier in the day in Ohio, Obama hammered Romney for opposing his bailout of the auto industry and said his challenger tried to scare workers by saying inaccurately that Chrysler planned to shift jobs to China.

About one in eight Ohio jobs is tied to auto manufacturing, and the bailout has helped Obama win over some of the white-working class voters who are heavily backing Romney in rest of the country.

"I've been a Republican for 35 years and I've never voted for a Democrat on the federal level - until now," retiree Patrick Dorsey said as he waited for Obama to speak. "Economically, Romney's just going to make the rich richer."

TIGHT RACE IN POLLS

Romney will have a hard time winning the White House if he does not carry Ohio, and a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Saturday showed him trailing Obama by a statistically meaningless margin of 1 percentage point in the state. Other polls show him trailing by a larger margin in Ohio.

The race for the White House remains effectively tied at a national level, with 47 percent backing Obama and 46 percent supporting Romney, according to a Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll released on Saturday.

Still, analysts say Obama holds an edge in many of the eight or nine competitive states that will determine who controls the White House. Reuters/Ipsos polls released on Saturday showed Obama leading by 3 percentage points in Virginia but trailing by 2 points in Colorado. The two were dead even in Florida. All the results were within the credibility interval, a measurement of the accuracy of online polls.

Other surveys generally show Obama leading by narrow margins in Wisconsin, Nevada, New Hampshire and Iowa. Romney is considered to have the edge in North Carolina.

Romney has tried to expand the battlefield over the past week to states that had been considered beyond his reach.

"We win Pennsylvania, we save America in three days," Romney's vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, said at an airport rally in the state capital, Harrisburg.

Ryan is due to visit Minnesota on Sunday, another state that has been considered solidly Democratic. Romney himself is due to speak in Pennsylvania on Sunday.

Obama officials say the Romney campaign is visiting those states out of desperation because he has been unable to establish a clear lead in other battleground states.

Nevertheless, the Obama campaign is dispatching Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill Biden, to Pennsylvania and former President Bill Clinton to Minnesota.

On Saturday, Obama held a rally in Wisconsin, a state considered safely in his column earlier this year.

"You don't take anything for granted, you go as hard as you can to the end, and that's exactly what we're going to do in all our battleground states," campaign manager Jim Messina said on a conference call.

Obama started the day at the federal government's disaster-relief headquarters in Washington, where he received an update on the efforts to help Northeastern coastal states recover from devastating storm Sandy.

The storm has afforded the Democrat an opportunity to rise above the fray of campaigning. But it has also raised the stakes for him to show his administration can respond quickly and effectively in a crisis, as residents of New York and New Jersey vent frustration at power outages and gasoline shortages.

BY ELIZABETH KIESZKOWSKI / ekieszkowski@staradvertiser.com

My special love is music, and it?s my ?work? to keep tabs on performances and events in Honolulu.

Sad, right?

It can be tough, though, because Honolulu has a lot to offer. It?s a classic case of ?be careful what you wish for.?

In the last 10 days, I?ve been out to musical performances by the Dukes of September (with Steely Dan?s Donald Fagen), the Melvins (Lite) (on a world-record-breaking tour stop), Jon Cleary and Delta Spirit, who stepped up to play a makeup show when Hallowbaloo was shut down for the Oct. 27 tsunami scare.

These were all big shows, in their own way.

But in the middle of all these staged performances, I also had the wonderful experience of listening to Quadraphonix jam in their practice space, getting down to basics in a way the band has always embraced by playing knee to knee, rigged equipment, spontaneous passages and all.

I searched out the band?s Kalihi studio on a steamy, rainy night, and found them in a warren of spaces behind a karaoke joint.

Inside the place, I heard the music ? interplayed drum and congas, a winding guitar with a South Indian line and laid-back bass to pull it together.

The two MCs of Ninja Pleeze raised the feel higher, rolling words off each other, righteous, then goofing, getting a laugh. Then it all came back around to a world-beat sound.

The music was warm (as was the cramped space) and full of heart.

THE BAND has recorded a new album, after concentrating on life in Hawaii for the past several years. Now Quadraphonix would like to take its new music out into the world ? including to Malaysia, where guitarist Shree Sadagopan was born, lived until he was a teen, and first took up music.

Quadraphonix has launched a Kickstarter fundraising drive to support a tour. The band self-financed recording and mastering CDs. With support from fans, the band plans to go on the road beginning in January, 2013.

At the time I?m posting this blog, the band is still striving to raise $1,800 to reach its $5,000 goal.

With the aim of playing gigs in Malaysia, Japan and the West Coast of the U.S., this support will only cover a portion of the expense ? but if you?re a fan, consider kicking in. For a Kickstarter donation at a certain level, the band will deliver the album, a free digital download of previous album ?Just a reminder note,? and an unreleased live album, in addition to exclusive merchandise.

Pledges start at a dollar.

?BLUES IN THE RAGAS? took two years to record. It?s the band?s second full-length release, and drops on Friday, Nov. 9.

I?ve been able to listen to the new music, and it?s worth listening to. While the band continues to explore funk, jazz, hip-hop and world-beat grooves, Sadagopan?s digging into his South Indian heritage provides the buzz of something deep and distinctive.

Sadagopan provided me with an inside look at ?All That Was Given,? the fifth track of the album, with guest vocals by Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo. It combines lines in Sadagopan?s first language, Tamil, and it is exceedingly warm and affecting.

Here?s a key verse, as provided by Sadagopan:

Koduthathelam Koduthan avar yarukage Koduthan
(All that was given by the creator, who was it given to)

Orutharuka Koduthan ilai Orukage Koduthan
(was it given to one ? no. It was given to all of us)

Koduthathelam Koduthan ilai orukage koduthan
(All that was given by the creator, no, it was given to all of us.)

?I only used the main verse as it sums it all up!? said Sadagopan. ?This was written at time where South India was really suffering from political corruption and rich getting richer. Unfortunately not too much has changed.?

His take on the traditional song is inspired by the exploitation of Malay farmers by commercial interests, including the sale of expensive GMO seed that often bankrupts the growers, Sadagopan said.

QUADRAPHONIX PLAYS a CD release party Friday, Nov. 9, at Fresh Cafe ? stay tuned for more details on that, and look for updates on the band?s Facebook page.

I?ve been a fan of Quadraphonix for more than 10 years, reaching back to the era when Susan Copp played double bass with the group. So it?s especially satisfying to find that the band has found a way to thrive, taking inspiration from completely fresh and enduring traditional sources.

Hawaii musicians: Are you looking to get your music heard by a wider audience, throughout the U.S. and perhaps in other countries? The South by Southwest Music Festival might be right for you. The deadline to apply for a showcase slot at SXSW is Wednesday, Nov. 7. Get details here.

Scientists create 'endless supply' of myelin-forming cells

Friday, November 2, 2012

In a new study appearing this month in the Journal of Neuroscience, researchers have unlocked the complex cellular mechanics that instruct specific brain cells to continue to divide. This discovery overcomes a significant technical hurdle to potential human stem cell therapies; ensuring that an abundant supply of cells is available to study and ultimately treat people with diseases.

"One of the major factors that will determine the viability of stem cell therapies is access to a safe and reliable supply of cells," said University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) neurologist Steve Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., lead author of the study. "This study demonstrates that ? in the case of certain populations of brain cells ? we now understand the cell biology and the mechanisms necessary to control cell division and generate an almost endless supply of cells."

The study focuses on cells called glial progenitor cells (GPCs) that are found in the white matter of the human brain. These stem cells give rise to two cells found in the central nervous system: oligodendrocytes, which produce myelin, the fatty tissue that insulates the connections between cells; and astrocytes, cells that are critical to the health and signaling function of oligodendrocytes as well as neurons.

Damage to myelin lies at the root of a long list of diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and a family of deadly childhood diseases called pediatric leukodystrophies. The scientific community believes that regenerative medicine ? in the form of cell transplantation ? holds great promise for treating myelin disorders. Goldman and his colleagues, for example, have demonstrated in numerous animal model studies that transplanted GPCs can proliferate in the brain and repair damaged myelin.

However, one of the barriers to moving forward with human treatments for myelin disease has been the difficulty of creating a plentiful supply of necessary cells, in this case GPCs. Scientists have been successful at getting these cells to divide and multiply in the lab, but only for limited periods of time, resulting in the generation of limited numbers of usable cells.

"After a period of time, the cells stop dividing or, more typically, begin to specialize and form astrocytes which are not useful for myelin repair," said Goldman. "These cells could go either way but they essentially choose the wrong direction."

Overcoming this problem required that Goldman's lab master the precise chemical symphony that occurs within stem cells, and which instructs them when to divide and multiply, and when to stop this process and become oligodendrocytes and astrocytes.

One of the key players in cell division is a protein called beta-catenin. Beta-catenin is regulated by another protein in the cell called glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3B). GSK3B is responsible for altering beta-catenin by adding an additional phosphate molecule to its structure, essentially giving it a barcode that the cell then uses to sort the protein and send it off to be destroyed. During development, when cell division is necessary, this process is interrupted by another signal that blocks GSK3B. When this occurs, the beta-catenin protein is spared destruction and eventually makes its way to the cell's nucleus where it starts a chemical chain reaction that ultimately instructs the cell to divide. However, after a period of time this process slows and, instead of replicating, the cells begin to then commit to becoming one type or another. The challenge for scientists was to find another way to essentially trick these cells into continuing to divide, and to do so without risking the uncontrolled growth that could otherwise result in tumor formation.

The new discovery hinges on a receptor called protein tyrosine phosphatase beta/zeta (PTPRZ1). Goldman and his team long suspected that PTPRZ1 played an important role in cell division; the receptor shows up prominently in molecular profiles of GPCs. After a six-year effort to discern the receptor's function, they found that it works in concert with GSK3B and helps "label" beta-catenin protein for either destruction or nuclear activity. The tipping point was the identification of a molecule ? called pleiotrophin ? that essentially blocks the function of the PTPRZ1 receptor. They found that by regulating the levels of pleiotrophin, they were able to essentially "short circuit" PTPRZ1's normal influence on cell division, allowing the cells to continue dividing.

While the experiments were performed on cells derived from human brain tissue, the authors contend that the same process could also be applied to GPCs derived from embryos or from "reprogrammed" skin cells. This would greatly expand the number of cells potentially derived from single patient samples, whether for transplantation back to those same individuals or for use in other patients.
