It's time to howl at the Full Wolf Moon

NASA

Up-close exploration of the moon, Earth's only natural satellite, began in 1959 and hasn't stopped. Take a look at scenes from 50 years of moon exploration.

By Joe Rao, Space.com

The first full moon of 2013 will light up the night sky on Saturday night, but did you know it's a full moon of many names?

Full moon names date back to the Native American tribes of a few hundred years ago, who lived in what is now the northern and eastern United States. Those tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred.

There were some variations in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were used throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England on west to Lake Superior. European settlers followed their own customs and created some of their own names. Since the lunar (or "synodic") month is roughly 29.5 days in length on average, the dates of the full moon shift from year to year.

Here is a listing of all of the full moon names, as well as the dates and times for 2013. Unless otherwise noted, all times are for the Eastern time zone:

Jan. 26, 11:38 p.m. ET ?Full Wolf Moon: Amid the zero cold and deep snows of midwinter, the wolf packs howled hungrily outside Indian villages.? It was also known as the Old Moon or the Moon after Yule.? In some tribes this was the Full Snow Moon; most applied that name to the next moon. [Full Moon: Why Does It Happen? (Video)]

Feb. 25, 3:26 p.m. ET ?Full Snow Moon: Usually the heaviest snows fall in this month. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence, to some tribes this was the Full Hunger Moon.?

March 27, 5:27 a.m. ET ?Full Worm Moon: In this month the ground softens and the earthworm casts reappear, inviting the return of the robins. The more northern tribes knew this as the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signals the end of winter, or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. The Full Sap Moon, marking the time of tapping maple trees, is another variation. [Phases of the Moon in 2013: A Lunar Calendar]

In 2013, this is also the Paschal Full Moon?? the first full moon of the spring season. The first Sunday following the paschal moon is Easter Sunday, which indeed will be observed four days later on Sunday, March 31.

April 25, 3:57 p.m. ET ??Full Pink Moon: The grass pink or wild phlox is one of the earliest widespread flowers of the spring. Other names were the Full Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon and ? among coastal tribes ? the Full Fish Moon, when the shad come upstream to spawn. The moon will also undergo a very slight partial lunar eclipse, which will be visible from the Eastern Hemisphere, but not from North America. At its peak, less than 1.5 percent of the moon's diameter will be immersed in Earth?s umbral shadow; a very underwhelming event, to say the least.

May 25, 12:25 a.m. ET ??Full Flower Moon: Flowers are now abundant everywhere. It was also known as the Full Corn Planting Moon or the Milk Moon. The moon will also undergo a penumbral lunar eclipse, but the passage of the moon's disk into Earth's shadow will result in one of the slightest eclipses of all, administering a mere touch of penumbral shadow at the northernmost part of the lunar limb.

June 23, 7:32 a.m. ET ??Full Strawberry Moon: Strawberry-picking season peaks during this month.? Europeans called this the Rose Moon. The moon will also arrive at perigee only 32 minutes earlier, at 7 a.m. ET at a distance of 221,824 miles (356,991 kilometers) from Earth. So this is the biggest full moon of 2013. Very high ocean tides can be expected during the next two or three days, thanks to the coincidence of perigee with the full moon.?

July 22, 2:16 p.m. ET??Full Buck Moon: Named for when the new antlers of buck deer push out from their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, thunderstorms now being most frequent. Sometimes it's also called the Full Hay Moon.

Aug. 20, 9:45 p.m. ET ??Full Sturgeon Moon: This large fish of the Great Lakes and other major bodies of water like Lake Champlain is most readily caught at this time. A few tribes knew it as the Full Red Moon, because when the moon rises it looks reddish through a sultry haze. It was also known as the Green Corn Moon or Grain Moon.

Sept. 19, 7:13 a.m. ET ??Full Harvest Moon: Traditionally, this designation goes to the full moon that occurs closest to the autumnal (fall) equinox. The Harvest Moon usually comes in September, but (on average) once or twice a decade it will fall in early October.? At the peak of the harvest, farmers can work into the night by the light of this moon.?

Usually the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S., and only 10 to 20 minutes later for much of Canada and Europe. Corn, pumpkins, squash, beans and wild rice ? the chief Indian staples ? are now ready for gathering.

Oct. 18, 7:38 p.m. ET ??Full Hunters' Moon: With the leaves falling and the deer fattened, it's now time to hunt.? Since the fields have been reaped, hunters can ride over the stubble, and can more easily see the fox, as well as other animals, which can be caught for a Thanksgiving banquet after the harvest.?

A penumbral lunar eclipse will also take place. Perhaps for some minutes centered on the time of greatest eclipse (7:50 p.m. ET) the penumbra might be marginally detectable over the moon?s southernmost limb, for at that moment the penumbral magnitude will reach 76.5 percent.? Those living across the eastern half of North America might see some evidence of this faint penumbral shading soon after local moonrise.

Nov. 17, 10:16 a.m. ET ?Full Beaver Moon: At this point of the year, it's time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Full Moon came from the fact that the beavers are now active in their preparation for winter. It's also called the Frosty Moon.

Dec. 17, 4:28 a.m. ET ??Full Cold Moon: On occasion, this moon was also called the Moon Before Yule. December is also the month the winter cold fastens its grip. Sometimes this moon is referred to as the Full Long Nights Moon, and the term "Long Night" Moon is a very appropriate name because the nights are now indeed long and the moon is above the horizon a long time. This particular full moon makes its highest arc across the night sky because it's diametrically opposite to the low sun.?

Mississippi River shipping resumes at Ill. lock

(AP) ? Mississippi River shipping is back in business again near St. Louis, a day after a key lock and dam was closed when a barge damaged a gate.

Coast Guard Lt. Colin Fogarty says the auxiliary lock near Granite City, Ill., reopened about 10 p.m. Tuesday after the Army Corps of Engineers made sufficient repairs.

But the shutdown is causing a lingering snarl of barge traffic. Fogarty says 106 barges and 19 vessels were lined up, waiting to pass through the lock as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The corps says the gate to the 600-foot-long lock was damaged about 5 a.m. Tuesday when a barge got caught up on it.

Fogarty says the accident had nothing to do with the river's low water levels.

Best PPC Program Bid & Ads | TrafficSoar

Making a dollar on the Internet is often times not as easy as the guru?s claim it to be.? It is tough, yet millions of online businesses are making millions of dollars each year.? The rate of success on the World Wide Web is of no other place in history.? And, it is worldwide.

Online business can be that of traditional businesses or they can be web storefronts.? It can be an affiliate business or a business line that one creates themselves.? There is no right form of business on the Internet, only the right forms of marketing.

Pay per click has been in existence since the late 1990?s and has grown to be the most effective form of marketing on the Internet.? It generates billions for both the publisher and the advertisers.? It is a billion dollar industry and one that is growing each year.

Pay per click is an auction that the search engine or publisher performs for advertisers to bid on keyword phrases.? These keyword phrases are what the product or business is associated with and what will pull your site into the top rankings of the results should you have the high bid.? It is the most liked and most rapid form of advertising, producing results sometimes instantly.

Many popular keywords have become expensive and out of reach for the small business and lower cost business.? For this reason research is necessary.? It is important to take into consideration the search engine users demographics and the psychology of the consumer.? It is also valuable to use techniques such as misspelling keywords and using odd combination of keyword phrases.? This will help to lower the cost per click of the keyword.

Advert content will be another leading role in the success of your campaign.? These are yourppc ads.? It will be necessary to study and outweigh the competition through a professional advert.? The advert should include your keywords.? Often times the user that enters the keyword phrase looks for the keyword phrase in the advert for the website.

Landing pages will also be a consideration.? If the business owner or affiliate has a company that takes them to the main page of a store and they are advertising a certain product within the store then they will want a landing page that is just of that product.? This will be convenient for the visitor and more likely to convert into a sale.

The best ppc will be depending on your product or business.? This is where the demographics of the search engine audience come in.? If you are campaigning a product for younger males that is technology than you want the audience to hold the highest amount of young males with interests in technology.? This would be Yahoo over Google, which is the most popular search engine today. The best ppc will depend on your company?s product or business.? There are many search engines that are specialized as well, such as the Real Estate Company search engine.

Nearly every search engine offers a ppc program. This is their source of revenue.

To determine the worth of the visitor will be your ppc bid.? This will be determine by either gathering historical data such as the number of sales and the number of visits to a site in a specific amount of time and dividing them giving each visitor a value.? The value will be the margin of profit you wish to receive.? Suppose, using this calculation each visitor was worth $1 then you would want your ppc bid for the selected keywords to be less creating a higher profit.? You may also wish to take the top five highest bids on the selected keyword phrases.? Through this form of calculating you would average the cost per bid by averaging the top five bids.? You would then take the average and have it as your high bid. It is important not to go over your profit margin.? Many marketers make the mistake of going past their profit margin resulting in a failed campaign.

Tracking your campaign will be necessary to know which keyword phrases the highest amount of visitors and the highest conversion are coming from.? You will want to improve your campaign by getting rid of any unproductive keywords and expanding on the productive keywords.? This will be a daily overseeing of your campaign.? You will also want to continually track the cost per bid of your keyword phrases as this will fluctuate.? The cost per click of the keyword phrase could rise or fall from day to day.

When in doubt seek an expert.? This will be the most important campaign of your career.? The expert will be able to assist from anything to reviewing your campaign to constructing and managing it.

Forums and reviews which the online business marketer can seek information through.? This is a great asset as often times it is located by not only other marketers but professionals.? Through the forums one will be able to ask questionsa and get responsible. TrafficSoar.com is an excellent place to enlist.

TrafficSoar.com is an excellent resource for campaigning needs.? They have information on the site as well as consultation and expert services.

In conclusion, if your budget allows it, the best bet is an expert.? TrafficSoar.com is an excellent resource campaigning needs.? They have information site as well as consultation and expert services.? PPC Campaigning is not something that can be done with your eyes closed.? It is something that requires skill and dedication.? Overseeing your campaign daily is something that is necessary.? Filling lose holes and continue expansion on your campaign is something that will be continual

I Learned Effect from Spot LED GU10 | Home Improvement Ideas

spot led I Learned Effect from Spot LED GU10I already work as lighting engineer for years before I finally found LED lights. This technology already helps me a lot on later years, and I learned a lot from these lights. First, a lighting system would be a complicated system. Most of the time, we needed to rehearse and test the setting for multiple times before we finally get the right composition and atmosphere. LED lights change the way I work.

First, I learned that more advanced technology, if it is used properly, will create more enchanting results. LED does not only results powerful light. With some more specific touch, it creates mood and atmosphere on stage and room. I can even make collaboration between decoration and spot led lighting into something dramatic. This is why they paid me the big bucks.

Second, I also learned that we always need the highest quality of tools to make highest expectation comes true. LED lights save me money because of their durability. They have long life span and it gives just the best support for people like me. I can earn more while producing more as well. Plus, as it takes small power, everyone likes to work with me. British debate on EU may sour sentiment toward UK assets

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron may have sown enough uncertainty about Britain's membership of the European Union to potentially sour investor sentiment towards UK stocks, bonds and sterling.

In a much-anticipated speech, Cameron promised on Wednesday to hold a referendum on whether the country should stay in the EU if his government is re-elected in 2015.

While UK financial assets did not lose much ground during or after the speech, there are concerns that a prolonged debate on whether Britain should stay in the EU may have a damaging impact on business and investment, as Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg later commented.

"Britain would have to be re-valued as a location for investment for German companies," Rainer Dulger, president of the employers' association Gesamtmetall, told Reuters. "On (Goods and services) produced for customers on the continent Britain would lose appeal," he added.

An exit would be an additional worry for international investors, who are already concerned about Britain's sluggish economic activity and the risk that it will lose its prized triple-A credit rating.

"Cameron needs to explain clearly what his policy is to the international investors who put their faith and money in UK corporates," said Simon Derrick, head of currency research at Bank of New York Mellon.

"The real 'so what' is that on top of the issues with regard to the economy and the UK's credit rating we could also get political uncertainty."

Derrick said the euro therefore had the potential to push towards 90 pence against sterling, more than six percent above its current levels.

Markus Kerber, head of Germany's influential industry lobby group BDI, said Britain put the EU as a whole at risk.

"Cameron's European policy course leads straight into a dead end," Kerber said. "Permanently exiting the economic and currency union and making national interest the measure of all things, endangers the internal market," Kerber added.

Given analysts do not expect any referendum to be held for several years, it means a long period of uncertainty for UK assets.

Against this backdrop, an important driver of investor sentiment towards UK assets will be how euro zone politicians and business leaders react to Cameron's demands for a new settlement with the EU.

So far, the signs are unpromising.

"Overall, it's a very confused speech. A lot will probably think 'What the hell is he thinking?'," said Marc Ostwald, fixed income strategist at Monument Securities.

The damage the EU membership debate could inflict on UK assets is all the greater given investors are growing less worried about the euro zone crisis, from which sterling and gilts had been a bolt-hole.

The premium that investors demand to hold UK government bonds rather than German ones would therefore widen from around 44 basis points currently. At the height of the euro zone crisis in late 2011, the yield on the UK 10-year bond fell below its German counterpart.

Barclays economist Simon Hayes said even though the chances of a UK exit from the EU were remote, uncertainty over the issue would "make it harder to attract inward investment".

This is expected to influence investors' appetite for UK stocks. Small- and medium-sized British firms, which tend to be more reliant on sales to the EU than FTSE 100 companies, would be the most exposed to the EU membership debate.

Any turn in this debate that suggested exporting goods or services to the EU might become harder or more costly for firms would hurt UK stocks more broadly.

However, Gerard Lane, an equity strategist at Shore Capital, said large British companies which earn most of their income from abroad, such as Unilever, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, would be most sheltered from any downdraft in UK stocks.

Obama Speech Video: President Gives Inaugural Address

Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the top Republican on the Budget Committee, was not impressed with President Obama's claim in his inaugural address that the country's entitlement programs "do not make us a nation of takers."

The line was a reference to the election campaign in which Mitt Romney infamously said that he was not campaigning for the 47 percent of people who don't pay federal taxes, and in which he accused Obama of trying to "gut" the 1990's welfare reforms.

Sessions, who largely agreed with Romney's positions, took that line and others as a sign that the president will not take steps to curb the costs of Social Security, Medicare and other expensive programs.

"They ran all the way to Election Day campaigning, attacking Republicans who 'want to take your Social Security,' and it was successful," said Sessions just after the inaugural ceremony.

"He's gotten reelected, the country's still on an unsustainable debt path," said Sessions. "If he says 'No,' we probably won't have any entitlement reform, and he can put it on his tombstone that he refused to alter Social Security and Medicare and put either one of them on a sustainable course."

Obama has proposed trimming an additional $300 billion to $400 billion from health care programs, and has floated the possibility of shifting to a stingier measure of inflation to slow the growth of Social Security. Sessions estimates the move would cut $250 billion over 10 years, which he said is not enough.

"You want my opinion about the president's greatest failing of all, that dwarfs every other failing -- he will not tell the American people we are on an unsustainable course, and we have to change," Sessions said.

He found the "takers" line in Obama's speech revealing.

"I would say they're a little sensitive about it," Sessions said. "Because we're on a path to spend about $10 trillion on social programs the next 10 years, $60,000 per family that's below the poverty line -- that's how much we spend for these means-tested programs. And there is a danger of dependency. To be honest, the president should recognize that."

The debate over welfare and the 47 percent played out against the background of an economy that has created the greatest level of income equality in America since before the Great Depression -- a fact Obama took notice of in his remarks.

"We do not believe that in this country freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few," Obama said. "We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other through Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michelle Obama made it a fashion tradition Monday night, wearing a custom-made Jason Wu gown to the inauguration balls. The ruby-colored dress was a follow-up to the white gown Wu made for her four years ago when she was new to Washington, the pomp and circumstance, and the fashion press.

She now emerged in velvet and chiffon as a bona fide trendsetter.

"I can't believe it. It's crazy," said Wu, reached at his Manhattan studio. "To have done it once was already the experience of my life. To have a second time is tremendous."

President Barack Obama also struck a similar style chord to his first-term inaugural balls: He wore a white tie with his tuxedo.

The red halter dress was the only one Wu, who went from fashion insider to household name on this night in 2009, submitted for Mrs. Obama's consideration. He collaborated with jeweler Kimberly McDonald on the jeweled neckline. "For this occasion, it had to be real diamonds," Wu said.

He said he felt the dress showed how he has grown up as a designer ? and how Mrs. Obama's style has evolved to be even more confident.

The first family headed out to inaugural festivities earlier on Monday with Mrs. Obama leading a very coordinated fashion parade in a navy-silk, checkered-patterned coat and dress by Thom Browne that were inspired by a menswear necktie.

The outfit was specifically designed for Mrs. Obama, but Browne said he wasn't 100 percent sure she was going to wear it until she came out with it on at Inauguration. "I am proud and humbled," he said.

The rest of Mrs. Obama's Inauguration Day outfit included a belt from J. Crew, necklace by Cathy Waterman and a cardigan by Reed Krakoff, whose ensemble she also wore to yesterday's intimate, indoor swearing-in ceremony.

Obama wore a blue tie with his white shirt, dark suit and overcoat. Malia Obama had on a plum-colored J. Crew coat with the hemline of an electric-blue dress peeking out and a burgundy-colored scarf, and her younger sister Sasha had on a Kate Spade coat and dress in a similar purple shade.

"It is an honor that Sasha Obama chose to wear Kate Spade New York," said the company's creative director, Deborah Lloyd, in an email to the Associated Press. "She epitomizes the youthful optimism and colorful spirit of the brand. We are so proud to have been a part of this historic moment."

Jenna Lyons, creative director of J. Crew, said it was "a huge point of pride for all of us" to be a part of the day ? as the brand was back in 2009 when the girls wore outfits by CrewCuts, its children's label.

"It's amazing to see the evolution of the family. I love the way Michelle looks. She looks beautiful in something so clean and tailored. It's such an elegant choice," Lyons said, "and they all look so sophisticated! You can see how the girls have grown up in the four years, and they're still so alive and vibrant, but more sophisticated."

The vice president's wife, Jill Biden, wore a gray coat and dress by American designer Lela Rose.

Mrs. Obama has worn Browne's designs for other occasions, including a gray dress with black lace overlay to one of the presidential debates last fall, and she honored him last summer at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards for his contribution to fashion.

Browne made his name in modern ? very modern ? menswear, but he launched womenswear in 2011. He was in Paris on Monday, just finishing previews for his next menswear collection. The idea to use the tie fabric came to him because he was indeed designing these men's clothes at the same time, he explained.

"I wanted 'tailored' for her. For me, she stands for strength and confidence, and that's what I wanted to design for her," he said.

Simon Collins, dean of the school of fashion at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, said the Obamas dressed in their typical fashion: one that shows pride in their appearance.

"They are a stylish couple and their children look fabulous. Too many people get dressed in the dark," he said. "They show it's good to dress up, take pride in how you look. ... It's a wonderful example for America and the rest of the world."

He also noted that the Obamas seem to understand that the fashion industry is a driving force in the U.S. economy and that its lobby is a powerful one. They don't treat fashion frivolously, he observed.

The first lady "is so supportive of so many American designers," Browne noted.

But Collins said he was a bit surprised the public doesn't pay much attention to the president's wardrobe. He joked that Obama should perhaps try one of Browne's signature shrunken suits ? the ones that show a man's ankles.

At the end of the Inaugural festivities, Mrs. Obama's outfit and accompanying accessories will go to the National Archives.

Connecticut town names school for slain Sandy Hook teacher

(Reuters) - In the first permanent public memorial created after last month's massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the nearby town of Stratford, Connecticut, has named a local school for a teacher slain in the attack who was hailed as a hero.

The Stratford Town Council late on Monday, a month to the day following the attack, voted unanimously to name a new school the Victoria Soto Elementary School. Soto, 27, was killed when she tried to protect her students from an armed gunman, who shot and killed 20 first-graders and six staff members on December 14.

Soto grew up in Stratford, a coastal town about 22 milessouth of Newtown, where Sandy Hook Elementary is located.

Police have said some of Soto's first-grade students escaped the massacre because she hid them in a closet as the gunman approached.

"She is my big sister, and this doesn't surprise me in any way that she was a hero in this tragedy," her younger sister Jillian Soto said after the town council vote.

In Newtown, residents have only just begun debating what should be done with the Sandy Hook school, which remains closed to everyone but police. The town's highest elected officials said it would be months before a decision is made.

At a town forum on Sunday, ideas from residents ranged from razing the school for a memorial, converting it to a planetarium and basing a peace center there. Parents of Sandy Hook's pupils, who now attend classes at a converted middle school in the neighboring town of Monroe, were divided on whether their children should ever again attend school at the Sandy Hook building.

A month after the rampage, authorities have yet to offer a motive behind 20-year-old Adam Lanza's attack. Lanza, described by family friends as having Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, in their home about 5 miles from the school before carrying out the Sandy Hook attack. Lanza shot himself dead following the rampage.

The mass killings plunged Newtown, a New England town of 27,000 residents about 70 miles northeast of New York City, into grief, along with much of the rest of the nation.

The shootings prompted President Barack Obama to place Vice President Joe Biden at the head of a task force that will recommend ways to curb gun violence. Lawmakers in New York State, meanwhile, were expected on Tuesday to pass the first new gun control law in the country since the shooting.

On Monday, a group of relatives and neighbors of the victims launched an initiative, called Sandy Hook Promise, to work toward ending gun violence in America.

By Us Weekly

After secretly tying the knot late last year, Evan Rachel Wood and Jamie Bell have an even bigger surprise for 2013: There's a baby on the way! "Evan Rachel Wood and husband Jamie Bell confirmed that they are expecting their first child later this year," a rep for the pregnant actress, 25, and actor, 26, tells Us Weekly exclusively. "The couple is thrilled."

It's just the latest unexpected news for the Hollywood twosome, who got married in California on Oct. 30 in a top-secret bash, where the "Mildred Pierce" actress wore a custom Chantilly lace mermaid gown by Carolina Herrera. The British-born "Man on a Ledge" actor first met Wood in 2005, when they costarred together in Green Day's "Wake Me Up When September Ends" video. After splitting in 2006, they reunited in summer 2011 -- with Bell proposing in early 2012.

Back in November, Wood shot down false speculation that she was expecting. "Sorry to disappoint. But no baby on the way here," the "True Blood" star (once engaged to Marilyn Manson) tweeted after she was photographed touching her stomach and wearing a baggy poncho at an L.A. grocery store.

It will be the first child for both.

Counting the twists in a helical light beam

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

At a time when communication networks are scrambling for ways to transmit more data over limited bandwidth, a type of twisted light wave is gaining new attention. Called an optical vortex or vortex beam, this complex beam resembles a corkscrew, with waves that rotate as they travel.

Now, applied physicists at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) have created a new device that enables a conventional optical detector (which would normally only measure the light's intensity) to pick up on that rotation.

The device, described in the journal Nature Communications, has the potential to add capacity to future optical communications networks.

"Sophisticated optical detectors for vortex beams have been developed before, but they have always been complex, expensive, and bulky," says principal investigator Federico Capasso, Robert L. Wallace Professor of Applied Physics and Vinton Hayes Senior Research Fellow in Electrical Engineering.

In contrast, the new device simply adds a metallic pattern to the window of a commercially available, low-cost photodetector. Each pattern is designed to couple with a particular type of incoming vortex beam by matching its orbital angular momentum?the number of twists per wavelength in an optical vortex.

Sensitive to the beam's "twistiness," this new detector can effectively distinguish between different types of vortex beams. Existing communications systems maximize bandwidth by sending many messages simultaneously, each a fraction of a wavelength apart; this is known as wavelength division multiplexing. Vortex beams can add an additional level of multiplexing and therefore should expand the capacity of these systems.

"In recent years, researchers have come to realize that there is a limit to the information transfer rate of about 100 terabits per second per fiber for communication systems that use wavelength division multiplexing to increase the capacity of single-mode optical fibers," explains Capasso. "In the future, this capacity could be greatly increased by using vortex beams transmitted on special multicore or multimode fibers. For a transmission system based on this 'spatial division multiplexing' to provide the extra capacity, special detectors capable of sorting out the type of vortex transmitted will be essential."

The new detector is able to tell one type of vortex beam from another due to its precise nanoscale patterning. When a vortex beam with the correct number of coils per wavelength strikes the gold plating on the detector's surface, it encounters a holographic interference pattern that has been etched into the gold. This nanoscale patterning allows the light to excite the metal's electrons in exactly the right way to produce a focused electromagnetic wave, known as a surface plasmon. The light component of this wave then shines through a series of perforations in the gold, and lands on the photodetector below.

If the incoming light doesn't match the interference pattern, the plasmon beam fails to focus or converge and is blocked from reaching the detector.

Capasso's research team has demonstrated this process using vortex beams with orbital angular momentum of ?1, 0, and 1.

"In principle, an array of many different couplers and detectors could be set up to read data transmitted on a very large number of channels," says lead author Patrice Genevet, a research associate in applied physics at SEAS. "With this approach, we transform detectors that were originally only sensitive to the intensity of light, so that they monitor the twist of the wavefronts. More than just detecting a specific twisted beam, our detectors gather additional information on the phase of the light beam."

The device's ability to detect and distinguish vortex beams is important for optical communications, but its capabilities may extend beyond what has been demonstrated.

"Using the same holographic approach, the same device patterned in different ways should be able to couple any type of free-space light beam into any type of surface wave," says Genevet.

Geaux Teacher ? Tricks That You Can Apply In Homeschooling

Every child deserves to receive a proper education, but you don?t have to send them to expensive schools. Homeschooling is growing in popularity as the preferred method of teaching children. The home learning environment can be a brilliant setting for delivering a solid education. To learn more, keep reading.

Your kids should always have craft supplies at the ready. While you are engaged with one kid, the other child can be entertaining themselves. Let your child use what?s available to spur creativity. It is a great learning tool.

Think carefully about what part of your home will be the designated school area. It must provide comfort yet be free from distractions. Get a small desk and make sure your child has enough room for the different activities you plan on doing. You should always be able to see your students too.

If you are going to homeschool your kids you need to make sure they get time with other children. One way to give your child social opportunities is to call your local school and inquire about your child participating in their organized sports. By doing this, you provide your child with the higher quality of education you are hoping for, while keeping up with their social well-being too.

There are many unique advantages to homeschooling in comparison to overcrowded public schools. You may want to ensure that they are learning everything they need to learn by using the state?s standardized tests. If you ever find that your child falls below grade level on a standardized test, bringing in a tutor or a secondary teacher can help.

You should always practice the utmost patience with your kids while home schooling. You will inevitably get frustrated sometimes, but you don?t want to take it out on your child. Give them as much praise as you can and they will show you that they have confidence as well as motivation after a while.

Teaching your children at home is a great way to make sure they get the individual attention they need to learn. Everyday life provides a great deal of learning opportunities. There is something to be learned from almost any daily activity.

If you are thinking about homeschooling your child, make sure you understand the concept completely. There are hundreds of sites online that can help you determine is right for both you and your children. Loving the idea of homeschooling is not enough for success. It also takes money, energy and time to educate your youngsters at home.

Keep in mind that giving your child a break once in awhile is helpful. Studying or reading for hours on end will leave them tired and bored, and it takes the fun out of learning. Give your children the opportunity to get rid of some of their pent up energy, or just give their brain a break. It?s a win/win situation for all those involved.

Stay mindful of the fact that homeschooling will at times not be very fun for your kid. You need to know that sometimes the road will be rough as you help your children down the path towards learning new things. Be sure your child knows that you are homeschooling because you love him and want the best for him.

Contact your state?s Homeschool Association to learn the guidelines and laws that you must abide by. You may be required to administer standardized tests or even register with the state. You want to avoid have truancy charges filed, so you need to contact the school board to let them know about your plans to homeschool your children.

Network with other homeschooling families. There are many different factors that motivate parents to choose homeschooling. It is pretty easy to find other people who have the same objectives as you. For example, local and online communities dedicated to homeschooling are increasingly popular and easy to find.

The good thing about homeschooling is that you can teach your children in the best style that works for them. You can use methods adapted to your child?s learning style and adapt your rhythm too. Using dominant learning styles helps your child be more successful at learning.

Check your state homeschooling laws before you set up your curriculum. Minimum number of homeschooling days, for example, can vary from state to state. State guideline and regulations vary so make sure you are well acquainted with your state?s expectation for your lessons. It?s best to use the local curriculum if possible.

If you are teaching both younger and older children, make sure that you have one on one time with them. You should set up a craft area or play area in your home school. Also, let your older kids help the younger ones. This teaches both of them in all actuality, and this provides the older kids with much-needed confidence.

This article should help you better understand homeschooling. This will let you make a decision about doing this with your family. Even if you decide against homeschooling, the advice you?ve read can still help further your children?s education.

Letters & Science News & Notes | Anthropology professor, students ...

Hawks

Perched on a corner of a table in his biological anthropology lab, John Hawks is surrounded by an array of human skulls, jaws and skeletons ? and a film crew complete with lights, camera and a microphone dangling over his head.

Last spring a crew for the public television series NOVA visited Hawks, a University of Wisconsin?Madison anthropology professor, and some of his students to talk Neandertals and find out what modern genetics can tell us about these ancient human cousins ? and about ourselves.

The resulting documentary, ?Decoding Neanderthals,? will air Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. central on Wisconsin Public Television.

?Neandertals have the mother of all image problems,? Hawks says in the trailer for the show. ?They?re brooding, they?re stupid-looking, they have no personality.?

But ongoing research is painting a very different picture, suggesting that Neandertals and their society were more advanced ? and possibly more like us ? than they are often portrayed in popular culture, Hawks says. Markings on teeth suggest that about 80 percent were right-handed, similar to modern human populations, and evidence from archaeology, genetics and morphology all indicate that Neandertals could speak and likely had developed language.

Genetic evidence also shows that modern humans interbred with Neandertals after leaving Africa more than 60,000 years ago, and that their legacy lives on in each of us. For the most part, Neandertal genes still exist, Hawks says. They are rare but present to some extent in most people, comprising about two to three percent of our DNA on average ? approximately the same amount as from one great-great-great-grandparent.

Six undergraduates from Hawks? Introduction to Biological Anthropology class helped test these findings for the NOVA documentary. The six, who represent a range of ethnicities and ancestries, submitted DNA samples for sequencing and analysis of their Neandertal roots. Their Neandertal percentages were revealed on camera as Hawks and the students made predictions and discussed what the test results might mean.

?The testing can tell you about your ancestry which I thought would be interesting because I don?t know exactly where my ancestors are from,? says sophomore Arielle Martin. ?I knew that they were from somewhere in west Africa, which the test confirmed, but I also have some European ancestry which I thought was a cool thing to find out.?

Though the students? ethnic backgrounds span the globe, Hawks points out that their reported percentages are remarkably similar. In fact, the extent of Neandertal ancestry varies much less around the world than one might expect, with somewhat more among people of European and Asian descent and less among those with primarily African roots.

?We?re much less biologically diverse than we think we are? It?s so interesting how much we can tell about human history from individual biological details,? says Brittany Estrada, a senior.

The results also play into Hawks? current research to learn which Neandertal genes are most prevalent, why, and what they?re doing in modern humans. To date he has found interesting clues in genes involved in immunity and metabolism.

Even with the incredible advances in genetic techniques, Hawks says scientists are still learning how to use the information those techniques provide. ?You can look at a skull and interpret something about it,? he says. ?With genes you can?t do that ? yet.?

Welcome to Macca's as McDonald's goes Aussie

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Looking for a McDonald's in Australia this month? You may bump into a "Macca's" instead.

The international fast food giant will temporarily change signs at selected stores across the country to "Macca's," the affectionate Australian nickname for the chain, in celebration of Australia Day, which falls on January 26 - a move that is its first such globally.

"We're incredibly proud to embrace our ?Australian-only' nickname," said Mark Lollback, the company's chief marketing officer in Australia, in a statement on Tuesday.

"What better way to show Aussies how proud we are to be a part of the Australian community than change our store signs to the name the community has given us?"

Surveys have showed at least 50 percent of Australians use the nickname.

Thirteen stores will change their store signage this week, starting from the state of New South Wales on Tuesday, the company said. The regular signage will return from Feb 4.

Australian English has a number of unique turns of phrase. According to a national survey, "Macca's" is the second most recognized Australianism, just behind "footy" for Australian rules football.

The popularity of the nickname has also prompted McDonald's to call on Macquarie Dictionary, the authority on the English language in Australia, to include "Macca's" in their online version, a proposal supported by one third of Australians, the company said.
