California toddler found in Kentucky [PHOTO/VIDEO], A 17-month-old California toddler was found in Kentucky on Dec. 27 and is now in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Authorities say the toddler was reported missing more than two months ago.

Alouette Day-Moreno-Baltierra, 62,?was found on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington with a woman claiming to be her grandmother.

Campus police received a phone call Thursday evening notifying them of a woman behaving suspiciously on university grounds, WKYT reports.

Responding officers questioned the woman and discovered the girl had been reported missing from Los Angeles on Oct. 15.

University of Kentucky Police Chief Joe Monroe gave the following statement to the press:

"She was very uncooperative, she was trying to hide the face of the child. She did not want us to question her about the child, other than she claimed it was her grandchild. She did not want to provide us any documents on who the child?s parents were. She was just very uncooperative with our officers. This is an example of where the responding officers followed a gut feeling that something just wasn?t right with the situation. We have been working with the Child Protective Services, LAPD and the FBI to make sure that we get Alouette returned safely to her legal custodian."

Officers on the scene noticed that the child didn't have any shoes, gloves or a coat on in the inclement weather. This?sparked off a?mental alarm and they approached Baltierra-Dejesus. When the officers confronted the woman, she?attempted to hide the child's face and refused to answer questions about who the child was.

Baltierra-Dejesus faces, now faces charges of child endangerment and custodial interference. She could also face felony charges in California for abducting the child.

NFL Rumors: Josh McDaniels Ready to be a Head Coach

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

As the NFL season comes to a close on Sunday; the coaching news heats up. Multiple reports are saying that the Cleveland Browns will clean house on Monday and that includes firing head coach, Pat Shurmur. The name that keeps popping up as a leading candidate for that job is former Denver Broncos head coach, Josh McDaniels. That name is like fingers on a chalkboard for most Broncos? fans but it would be a good hire for the Browns and before all of the Broncos? fans start calling me every name in the book; let me make my case.

The league is littered with successful coaches who were failures in their first job as a head coach; two names come immediately to mind. Bill Belichick and Mike Shanahan were both fired in their initial jobs, but both have gone on to win multiple Super Bowls. There?s so much that is learned from that first experience, even if the win/loss record is not good. A head coach has to deal with the media, injuries, supervising the assistant coaches and so much more. McDaniels did not handle those duties well in Denver but he would be better prepared the second time around.

McDaniels was asked to do too much with the Broncos; he was hired as the head coach and then he was in charge of everything in terms of the football operations. Contrary to what many believe; McDaniels did not ask for those responsibilities, they were given to him. It is still my belief that if the Broncos had provided McDaniels with a stronger support system; he would have been more successful. Does that excuse some of the mistakes he made? Of course not but not everything that happened in that year and a half was his fault. McDaniels was thrown into the deep end by the Broncos and he simply wasn?t ready, and he responded by turning into a dictator. If the Browns hire a strong General Manager, then McDaniels can be a very good head coach.

The last and most important reason is the McDaniels has a very good football mind, especially on the offensive side of the ball. He has worked wonders with run of the mill quarterbacks; Matt Cassel had one good season and it was under McDaniels. He turned a backup quarterback, Kyle Orton, into a decent starting quarterback. McDaniels also knows how to call a game and how to put together an offensive game-plan that fits his talent. If the Browns are committed to Brandon Weeden, then McDaniels may be the perfect fit.

Does he need to improve in some areas? Yes he does and those areas include; allowing his assistants to coach, player relations and his sideline demeanor. However with his experience with the Broncos, my hunch is that he will be more prepared for all of those things. The number one thing McDaniels has to do whenever the next head coaching opportunity presents itself is be himself. It?s great that Belichick is his mentor, but Josh has to be Josh. He tried too hard to be like Belichick when he was in Denver and it didn?t work.

As a Broncos fan; I am happy where things are now and I am happy that John Fox is the coach, but McDaniels deserves another chance. When the New England?Patriots hired Belichick, a lot of people snickered but no one is laughing now. McDaniels is probably not the next Belichick but he can be successful if he is surrounded with the right people.

Vietnam police arrest well-known dissident lawyer

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) ? Vietnamese police have detained a well-known dissident lawyer, escalating a crackdown on those who speak out against the country's one-party, authoritarian rule.

Le Quoc Quan was arrested on his way to drop off his children at school Thursday in the capital, Hanoi, according to the Vietnamese Redemptorist Church's website. The state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper reported Friday that Quan was detained for alleged tax evasion.

Quan, 41, had recently complained of harassment by authorities and required hospital treatment in August after being beaten by men he claimed were sent by the state. Since that incident, he had taken to carrying a golf club with him for self-defense.

Neither authorities nor Quan's family were available for comment.

Quan, who was detained in 2007 for three months on his return from a U.S. government-funded fellowship in Washington, is one of Vietnam's better-known dissidents and maintains a popular blog that highlighted human rights abuses and other issues off-limits to the state media.

In an interview with The Associated Press in September, Quan said he was under constant surveillance and that he, his family and staff received frequent warnings and pressure from authorities. But he pledged to keep speaking out against the government and in favor of multi-party democracy and freedom of speech and religion.

Vietnam converted to a market economy in the late 1980s and wants to integrate with the world, but maintains strict controls on freedom of speech and political expression. Bloggers, activists and others are routinely arrested and imprisoned. Foreign media representatives are allowed to live in Vietnam but are subject to restrictions on where they can travel and what they can report.

The Internet has emerged as a vital organizing tool for dissidents in recent years, and there has been a surge of blogs and Facebook pages highlighting criticism of the government. The rise of the Internet has combined with an economic slowdown, leaving the ruling elite feeling vulnerable.

In a related development, a court in Ho Chi Minh City Friday upheld long jail sentences two bloggers whose cases have attracted international criticism: Nguyen Van Hai, who received 12 years, and Ta Phong Tan, who received 10.

Judges said there were no grounds to alter the sentences passed down against the two in September for conducting "propaganda against the state", according to lawyer Ha Huy Son. A third member of the so-called "Free Journalist's Club," Phan Thanh Hai, had his four-year sentence reduced to three.

Nguyen Van Hai, who blogged under the name of Dieu Cay or tobacco pipe, was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in jail in 2008 for what international human rights groups said were trumped-up tax evasion charges. He served out his sentence in October 2010, but was not released and charged with a new crime.

Last week, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung gave a fresh warning to dissidents, ordering police to prevent people from "forming opposition political groups to carry out sabotage and that go against the interests of the country and the people."

Walmart Mexico paid bribes to open stores: Report

New York, Dec 19, 2012, (PTI):

Global retail giant Walmart, which is facing uproar in India over its lobbying efforts and allegations of bribery, has come under increased scrutiny after a US media report said that its Mexico affiliate bribed local officials to open stores in desired locations.

According to a New York Times investigation, Walmart de Mexico was "not the reluctant victim of a corrupt culture that insisted on bribes as the cost of doing business.

"Nor did it pay bribes merely to speed up routine approvals. Rather, Walmart de Mexico was an aggressive and creative corrupter, offering large payoffs to get what the law otherwise prohibited," the publication said.

Walmart's Mexico affiliate used bribes to subvert democratic governance ? public votes, open debates, transparent procedures as well as to circumvent regulatory safeguards that protect Mexican citizens from unsafe construction. It also used bribes to outflank rivals, the report said.

The report comes amid opposition in India over Walmart's lobbying efforts to enter the Indian market as well as allegations of bribery.

The US Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are conducting their own investigation of Walmart of possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, a federal law that prohibits American corporations or their subsidiaries to bribe foreign officials.

According to the Times report, Walmart Mexico was eyeing a location near Mexico's ancient ruins in Teotihuacan, north of Mexico City to open a store. However, zoning requirements were coming in the way of Walmart to open the store at this location.
But at the headquarters of Walmart de Mexico, executives were not about to be thwarted by the unfavourable zoning decision.

Walmart executives paid a USD 52,000 bribe to an official to change the zoning map to allow Walmart's store.

Walmart de Mexico broke ground on the location in 2004 amid fierce opposition by protesters who did not want a Walmart so close to a cultural spot.

The Times accessed confidential Walmart documents which identified 19 store sites across Mexico that were the target of Walmart de Mexico's bribes.

Matching information about specific bribes against permit records for each site, the Times found that dates of bribe payments coincided with dates when critical permits were issued.

The report said that bribes totalling USD 341,000 were paid on eight instances, including on one occasion to build a Sam's Club in one of Mexico City's most densely populated neighbourhoods near the Basilica de Guadalupe without a construction license, an environmental permit or even a traffic permit.

Another nine bribe payments totalling USD 765,000 were paid to built a vast refrigerated distribution centre in an area of Mexico City where electricity was so scarce that many smaller developers were turned away.

Responding to the allegations of bribery, Walmart spokesman David Tovar said in the Times report that the company is "committed to having a strong and effective global anticorruption programme everywhere we operate and taking appropriate action for any instance of noncompliance."

In Teotihuacan, the Times found that Walmart de Mexico executives approved at least four different bribe payments of more than USD 200,000 to build a medium-size supermarket.

Without these payoffs, it would not have been possible for Walmart to build the store in the location.

Walmart is the largest private employer in Mexico, employing 221,000 people working in 2,275 stores, supermarkets and restaurants.

The report said that Walmart de Mexico officials did not themselves pay bribes but that payoffs were made by outside lawyers and fixers.

According to Walmart de Mexico's written policies, these fixers could be entrusted with up to USD 280,000 to "expedite" a single permit.?

K-State holds off Texas Southern 78-69

? Turns out scoring doesn?t have to be so difficult for Kansas State.

Points come when the Wildcats get the ball to Rodney McGruder in the lane, where he can dribble once toward the basket and use his size to his advantage on mid-range shots. They also come when the Cats pass quickly and accurately in transition.

Now, if they can only find a way to play strong defense at the same time.

Despite their best offensive showing, the Wildcats were still using their starters at the end of a 78-69 victory over Texas Southern on Tuesday at Bramlage Coliseum. They had to make 56 percent of their shots to overcome 15 turnovers and they needed a top-of-the-line performance from McGruder to survive with Texas Southern making 13 three-pointers.

Still, K-State coach Bruce Weber was happy with the outcome.

?If you watch Texas Southern?s scores, they are a team to be reckoned with,? Weber said of the Tigers (1-10). ?It?s a tough game. It?s a trap game. I think Stephen F. Austin beat Oklahoma tonight. You get these holiday games, if you?re not ready to play teams come in and make plays. These guys are for real.?

Regardless of opponent strength, the victory helped K-State break out of an offensive slump. The Wildcats managed 65 points in a narrow victory over George Washington two weeks ago and were at their worst during a 68-52 setback to No. 14 Gonzaga over the weekend.

That ugly loss left players embarrassed and Weber angry enough to deliver a fiery postgame speech.

?I was not very happy, to be honest,? Weber said. ?I said, ?You guys need to make a decision: Are you going to be a team or not????

With No. 8 Florida meeting K-State on Saturday at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., the Wildcats wanted to prove something to their coach and themselves by bouncing back with a victory over Texas Southern and fixing their offense in the process.

Behind a season-high 26 points from McGruder, who made 12 of 17 shots, they did both.

?It?s big for any player to see the ball go in,? McGruder said.

K-State (8-2) shook off 12 turnovers and lackluster defense in the first half to take a 35-31 lead at the break, and then sprinted to a 53-38 lead early in the second half.

Behind 24 points from Raymond Penn, Texas Southern hung around. It relied mostly on hot outside shooting, making 13 of 28 from three-point range, to pull within 72-66 with 1:13 remaining, but got no closer.

K-State dominated inside behind Thomas Gipson, who scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Jordan Henriquez, who added eight points, and McGruder.

Though McGruder played all over, he did most of his damage in the paint. Unlike previous games, when K-State coaches asked him to catch and shoot the ball on the perimeter after coming off complicated screens, he continually got the ball in his favorite area.

?We are getting better,? junior guard Shane Southwell said. ?Today, we did good, especially me and Thomas screening for Rodney. That?s why he was open so much. We just have to keep doing what we were doing today.?

And unlike past games, when Weber complained McGruder wasn?t taking enough shots, he fired away.

?He got it going early,? Texas Southern coach Mike Davis said. ?I thought he played fantastic.?

?He looked like a player,? added Weber.

The results were noticeable. McGruder looked like the same aggressive player that averaged 15.8 points as a junior, and his teammates fed off his success.

Gipson went to work inside and played strong defense, Southwell scored eight points, snared seven rebounds and had some nice passes while getting his first start of the year and Angel Rodriguez and Will Spradling moved the ball well in transition.

K-State finished with a season-high 21 assists as a team and outscored Texas Southern 46-20 in the paint. Other than making 2 of 13 three-pointers, the Wildcats showed offensive improvement.

?We got it where we could score easy baskets,? Weber said. ?We talk about making shots, well, we made 56 (percent).?

The Wildcats will need to continue to playing that way against the Gators, and do a better job defending the perimeter, if they hope to get their first statement victory of the Weber era later this week.

Still, winning a game with offense was a welcome change.

?It was positive for us,? McGruder said. ?I feel good about our offense. We see that we can score within our offense. It helps out and prepares us for upcoming games.?

?In Cold Blood? killers exhumed in effort to solve murder of Florida family

LANSING, Kan. ? The bodies of the two men executed for the 1959 murders of a Kansas family that became infamous in Truman Capote?s true-crime book In Cold Blood were exhumed Tuesday in an effort to solve slayings of a Florida family killed while they were on the lam weeks later.

The bodies of Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, both former convicts, were exhumed from the Mount Muncie Cemetery in Lansing, Kan., at the request of the Sarasota County, Fla, sheriff?s office, said the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

They were executed in 1965 for the murders of Herb and Bonnie Clutter and their children, Jimmie, three, and Debbie, two, in Holcomb, Kan., on Nov. 15, 1959.

A Sarasota County Sheriff?s detective has been trying to determine whether Smith and Hickock were also responsible for the deaths of Cliff and Christine Walker and their two young children on Dec. 19, 1959, in their home in rural Osprey, about four hours northwest of Miami near Sarasota.

The two men fled to Florida after the Clutter murders and are thought to have spent at least a month there.

Kimberly McGath, a Sarasota County detective, said she requested the exhumation to obtain DNA that could be compared to that from semen found on Christine Walker?s underwear.

She is also hoping to obtain a match on a palm print found in the family?s home.

All the Walkers were shot. Christine Walker also was beaten and raped, and Debbie was drowned in a bathtub.

The unsolved murders 64 years ago remain one of the most horrific in Sarasota County history and shocked the community.

Detectives who investigated the Walker murders have considered Smith and Hickock possible suspects since 1960, according to records released by the Sarasota Sheriff?s Office.

Smith and Hickock were arrested in Las Vegas. A polygraph test cleared them of the Walker murders, but a polygraph expert said in 1987 such tests performed in the early 1960s were worthless.

Lansing police barricaded the entrance to the cemetery, limiting the access to the media and the public.

Exhuming a body is not a problem in the mild weather in Kansas, said Dr. Erik Mitchell, the coroner for Leavenworth County. But the exhumation still does not ensure the Sarasota County Sheriff?s Office will get the evidence they need for a DNA comparison.

How Communication Resolves Internal Issues | SEOmoz

The author's posts are entirely his or her own (excluding the unlikely event of hypnosis) and may not always reflect the views of SEOmoz, Inc.

After working at a handful of consulting agencies, as well as starting my own businesses, I have learned?how to anticipate, spot, defuse, and resolve different levels of issues and interpersonal challenges in order to keep teams focused and on track. When the stakes are high and everybody on the team is dedicating themselves to the success of their clients, their company, their team, and their own personal development, it is critical that it's somebody's job to own conflict resolution within the organization - even if that person is you!

Push yourself and your teammates to communicate early and often, even when the individual doesn't think the problem is easily solvable. From my experience, most issues arise from a lack of communication or a misunderstanding. Internal conflict and issues can lead to unhappy clients, unhappy employees, and unproductive teams.

Over the years, I have learned that keeping people happy, focused, and efficient at their job while still making sure they have the ability to be creative, be heard, and express their passion/ability in a meaningful way is an art form, and today I will share some of the specifics around how I have managed this process successfully to date.

This post was written for:

  • Individuals that manage their own team or company
  • Individuals whose job requires them to effectively interact with multiple teams/departments
  • Individuals that manage client relationships
  • Individuals who one day aspire to be managers themselves and want to set themselves up for success when they finally take that opportunity

Clearly communicate the company's mission, vision, and culture (values)

It's extremely important for a company to have a clearly defined mission, vision, and sense of culture (values). Equally crucial is to communicate these things on a somewhat consistent basis to the members of your team and to periodically review them to make sure that they are growing and evolving as your business grows. Regardless of whether you are a big fortune 500 company or a small three person team, it will serve you, your partners, and your employees well to have a sense of purpose, direction, and a core set of values from which to make decisions and keep everyone focused.

Here are times and places within the organization you should look to communicate this information:

  • During interviews, which can ensure that you are hiring individuals who are the right fit for your company
  • On-boarding processes for new hires
  • Company-wide meetings
  • Team meetings
  • Regular employee reviews (semi-annual, annual, etc..)
  • Posting it visibly inside the office (by the entrance, in lunch areas, etc...)

Grovo is a company doing a tremendous job at communicating their core values

Grovo Values

Company Values Board at the Entrance of?Grovo

For smaller businesses or managers of a ?team, it can be daunting to create a mission, vision, and culture. If this is not something your company has defined, you can start by making sure that whenever a new individual joins your team, someone is responsible for making sure that the employee has a clear understanding of why they were brought into the company.

An example of a clear "why" for a SEO company could be:

"We hired you as an SEO consultant to handle anywhere between 3-5 clients of your own, deliver value for your clients, and retain and grow the relationship over time."

Another example for an executive role could be:

"We hired you to research, build, and innovate upon a new marketing channel for our company. The goal for your role is to have this channel up and running within six months and expand into the European Market within 12-18 months."

This immediately establishes a clear definition and direction for that individual, as well as begins to paint a picture of how their role fits in within the rest of the team. By clearly defining and communication the "why" to that individual, you avoid potential confusion and frustration by this team member down the road.

Another added benefit of making sure every person on the team is clear in their role and what the company/team manager expects of them, is they will have a clear framework for making better decisions. They will know how to treat/work with their co-workers, have the ability to self reflect and up with solutions on their own, and encouraging others to live up to their full potential. This empowers people to solve their own issues by asking themselves ?What would my company expect of me in this situation??

Effective communication creates problem solvers, NOT problem creators

I often espouse to my colleagues that ?just because we all speak English doesn?t mean we speak the same language.? I believe that taking into account the audience/person you are speaking to, as well as considering their specific listening, learning, and comprehension types is extremely vital in being an effective communicator. It is not enough just to talk AT someone. When you want a person or group of people to truly listen, process, and interpret what you are saying, you have to think about things from their perspective and demonstrate you've put thought into their considerations, not just what you plan to communicate.

Below is a list of questions I ask myself before I attempt to communicate with another individual.

  • What is this person's or group's communication type? (brief/succinct/to the point OR detail-oriented/needs lots of examples/very thorough)
  • How much does this person or group value me as a person?
  • How much do I think this person or group will value the things I say?
  • Have I earned this person's or group's trust and respect?
  • Is what I?m about to communicate applicable to this person or group?
  • Have I spent time listening to them when they have communicated to me in a way they deemed meaningful?
  • What mood is this person or group in?
  • If I plan to communicate something at this time, will this person or group be focused on what I?m communicating?
  • Do I want this person or group to find what I?m communicating to be memorable?
  • If I want this person or group to take action off the back of what I?m communicating, how actionable am I making it?

By creating a team of effective communicators and listeners, you create structured channels in which people can feel appreciated/understood and be effective. This is another efficient and productive way to instill a culture of problem solvers rather than problem creators at your company.

?

Building a successful framework for creating, setting, and reviewing expectations

Every company should build a framework for creating, setting, and reviewing expectations. This ensures that as people and teams grow, become more efficient/effective, and blow past existing targets, company expectations are growing alongside it in an organic way.??This is also a great way to encourage personal development and growth.?

What a framework for creating, setting, and reviewing expectations looks like:

?

Creating expectations (goals)

When creating expectations (goals) for those within your organization, it?s important to map out what is required from the position, from the individual/team, and from the business. This will help define what success looks like. When defining expectations, it?s always important to leave an area of flexibility so that the person can help define expectations that match also match their passion/goals/strengths. Don?t just look to meet your needs, but create a win-win situation for the individual as well.

Setting expectations for everyone at the company

In both the world of consulting and working in-house, there is nothing more important than setting expectations (with the exception being delivering on your primary job competency). This applies to setting a client's expectations, setting your boss's expectations, and even setting up your own expectations. It?s important to make sure all expectations are clear, consistent, and that you regularly revisit them to make sure they haven?t shifted over time, otherwise before you know it, this could be you (see below). Painful right?

Communication Cartoon

Below is a list of the items I find helpful when setting someone's expectations:

  • Make sure you set aside dedicated time in your schedule for this task
  • Pick an environment that allows for few or no distractions
  • Make sure everyone who needs to be involved is a part of the process
  • Be sure to preface the conversation by telling the individual the purpose of this conversation, why it?s important, who it?s important to, and how important it is
  • Be explicit/extremely clear
  • Make sure you are pacing yourself when you communicate expectations and aren?t speaking too quickly
    ?
  • Find appropriate places to pause and ask the person or group, ?Does all of what I?m communicating make sense??
  • Encourage and allow the person or group to ask questions should something not make sense (even if that means pausing the conversation momentarily)

Once you have communicated all of this information to the person/group, take some extra time to have them communicate the information back to you. This is a great way to make sure they were listening and also keeps them engaged, especially when stakes are high (such as when deadlines have to be met, when reputation is on the line, or any type of sensitive situation is taking place). Below is an example of something I would say:

?I appreciate your time this afternoon. Now that we?ve gone through expectations together, I wanted to make sure I was clear and we are all on the same page. Would you mind communicating back to me the expectations that I have laid out to the best of your ability??

Once you feel the person/group has taken in all of the information you have provided them and processed it, be sure to ask if they feel comfortable/confident living up to or exceeding those expectations. For example, I would say:

"That is exactly what I had in mind. Thank you for communicating that back to me. Based on what I have communicated today, do you feel like these are expectations you feel comfortable meeting or exceeding?"

Once you have a sense of whether or not the person/group feels confident they can meet or exceed expectations, don?t hesitate to get a commitment from them. Getting a commitment makes it real for most people. Once it becomes real, the person feels both a moral and professional obligation to live up to those expectations. I would conclude by saying:

?That?s great to hear! We are proud to have you on our team. Can I get a commitment that you will work towards meeting or exceeding these expectations over the coming 60-90 days??

It is VERY, VERY IMPORTANT that with any verbal/written agreement between people, you must also leave room for flexibility. Any time you are too rigid, it puts people off or makes them feel like they can?t bring challenges, mistakes, or missed targets up to you in instances when they can?t meet expectations. That damages the communication and relationship between individuals/groups of people.?

?I want to be very clear that although these are the expectations we have for you right now, I also expect things to change because I know that nobody is perfect. What is more valuable to me than meeting expectations is ensuring that we maintain an open line of communication, so that in instances when expectations change or you're struggling to meet expectations, we can openly discuss it together and figure out a way to ensure your success here. How does that sound??

At the end of every such conversation, I want to ensure the person/group feels good about the meeting we had and feels like they have clarity, direction, and an open channel of communication to feedback on how they are doing moving forward. I will then find a way to talk about something a bit more light-hearted and loosen up the tone of the conversation. A great way to do this is to tell them something personal about yourself and then ask them something personal about themselves.

"Really appreciate you making time to have this discussion with me. Do you have any fun plans for this weekend? <PAUSE AND LISTEN.> Oh that sounds like fun. My wife and I are planning a trip to the mountains later this month to go fishing and get some fresh air. I can?t wait!?

Reviewing expectations (goals)

A great way to review expectations with people at your organization is to set-up a line manager meeting with them. This is an opportunity for each individual within the company to sit down in a one-on-one environment to discuss performance, personal goals, as well as struggles at work. Also set-up quarterly reviews to make sure that each individual is on track for meeting or exceeding agreed upon expectations (goals). Both types of reviews provide multiple touch points throughout the year to ensure things are on track and in areas where something is lacking, defining solutions to get back on track or reset expectations.

Scaling communication: what happens as offices get bigger and/or open up in multiple locations?

As companies grow and expand into new territories, communication, knowledge sharing, and time for one-on-one chats become more challenging to execute effectively.

Make it easy

?

Many organizations invest into tools such as BaseCamp, Yammer, or Chatter (if you are a sales driven organization). At Distilled, we have selected the Google ecosystem as our preferred method of centralized communication. Between Gmail for email, internal Google+ for social communication, Google Hangout for video chats, Google Chat for quick back and forth conversations, and Google Docs for collaborative efforts, it has proven to be a great way to keep in touch and keep and stay informed no matter where we work or how busy the work schedule.

?

Example of how Distilled uses Google+ internally (to promote good work from employees)

?

+Michael has done an incredible job at creating value for his clients. I received a phone call today from Client A and they mentioned how helpful, forward thinking, and valuable his recommendations have been. I just wanted to flag it up to the company on how awesome this was. Keep up the great work +Michael.

?

Example of how Distilled uses Google+ internally (to crowd source ideas)

?

I was looking at examples of social campaigns on Pinterest that have done well over the past 90 days. I found an interesting article about the demographics on Pinterest (insert link), great examples of content that have done well (insert link), and the providers that created the pieces (insert providers). It would be great to get everyone's feedback on social campaigns that have inspired them.?

?

Google Hangout (video chat)

?

For conversations that are too complex for chats and email or require quick turnaround times/iterative feedback, I find picking up a phone or even better, using a platform like Google Hangout to video chat can be an effective platform for communication.

?

Creating office hours

?

It?s important to keep an open door policy and make yourself accessible to others within the organization, even if that means an open ?digital? door policy. By creating office hours, you budget in time each week to have scheduled meetings/discussions with anybody who needs some of your time. This can be a great way to stay approachable, no matter your location or your schedule.

?

Ways to make office hours time efficient and effective:

  • Create 20 minute windows of time for each meeting (with the ability to request more time if needed)
  • Have the person requesting the meeting send over an agenda prior to the meeting
  • E-Mail any information or specifics over to the person should they need to do any preliminary reading or research

Keep it simple

?

I find keeping things simple is not always as easy as one might think, especially when communicating via text (email, chat, social, etc.). ?It's important to ensure that the message doesn?t get misrepresented and that the person receiving the communication has all of the context he/she needs to stay informed. The trick is being able to identify what the most critical bits of information that need to be conveyed are for the message to make sense while staying focused and succinct.?

?

Start off by prefacing the most important part of the email with a to the point message. At Distilled, we use TL;DR, which stands for "too long; didn?t read." After TL;DR, put the point of the email in a one or two sentence snippet, so that even if the person doesn?t have time to read the entire email, they understand the important takeaways of the message

?

Keeping E-Mails Simple using TL;DR (Too Long; Didn?t Read)

Bob,

TL;DR: We are hiring for a new position; I need someone to own this and would like to see if you are up for the task.

?

We have recently seen the amount of retained clients go up significantly within the past 12 months and would like to continue to grow each office by a rate of 30% per year. In order to accomplish this, we need to hire 4 more consultants over the next 6 months. We noticed you referred our company 2 out of the last 4 people we have hired and would like to see if you?d be interested in reducing consulting work in order to focus more of your time on recruiting. If this is something you'd like to be a part of, let?s catch up early morning Friday. Thanks in advance and speak soon!

?

Keeping a pulse on your organization

As organizations grow, mature, and age, it?s important to keep a hand on the pulse of your company and its ever changing needs. Find ways to figure out what your organization needs in order to be successful and invest in infrastructure. So many organizations depend on people in order to solve problems and as a result, it's crucial to find solutions that connect people, create engagement amongst teams, and facilitate learning.

Suri Cruise's $24,000 Playhouse? Katie Holmes Reportedly Buys 6-Year-Old Daughter Very Fancy Christmas Present (PHOTOS)

Suri Cruise must have been a very good girl this year: we hear her Christmas presents cost as much as some people make in a year.

According to The Sun, Holmes spent nearly $49,000 on gifts for her daughter, including a $24,000 playhouse for the six-year-old.

The Grand Victorian Luxury Playhouse is the creation of "a professional interior designer and expert builder,? according to the website of Sweet Retreat Kids, which the Daily Mail reports to be maker of the playhouse. The luxury faux-home comes with amenities you probably didn't have in your play home: electricity, running water, heat, a sun room and media room. That, and the option of a picket fence and landscaping designs, which put our fire escape vegetable gardens to shame. We have no doubt Holmes spoke with one of the designers to develop a great floor plan (yes, that?s an option) for the mini-palace.

Click through our slideshow to see photos of the playhouse and tell us what you think in comments below: is $24,000 an absurd amount to spend on a child's present?

Kids Lead Crowd-Funded Scientific Mission to Nicaragua: Science Education Is the Tide That Lifts All Boats

From left to right: Haley Reber, Enzo Monfre, Emma Cutler.

From left to right: Haley Reber, Enzo Monfre, Emma Cutler.

Enzo, Haley and Emma are ordinary kids working on an extraordinary mission. They are joining up with a team of Special Forces medics and elite, global surgeons to deliver medical aid to the Rama Indians of Nicaragua in the spring of 2013.

In partnership with HumaniTV, the journey will be beamed to tens of thousands of kids around the globe by satellite as the three middle school students trek through the jungles of Central America performing research on sustainable agriculture and seeing first hand how science and innovation improves peoples? lives.

Team XN

Team XN

?We want to send a message to kids that science isn?t just about getting a better job and making more money,? says team captain and the creator of Exploration nation, twelve year old Enzo. ?If it wasn?t for science, we?d still be sitting in a cave somewhere chomping on a mammoth bone in the dark.?

The high profile expedition was created by Enzoology Education, a social enterprise that produces Exploration Nation and HumaniTV, an online network featuring humanitarian aid programming to send the message that ?science education is the tide that lifts all boats?.

Enzo, Haley and Emma are part of the cast of Exploration Nation, an education program that features real kids doing real science research around the globe. These adventures are captured on video and coupled with lesson plans designed to inspire and motivate elementary and middle school students to take up careers in science.

America?s Future as a Global Innovator Lies at the Feet of our Youngest Citizens

According to a 2009 study by Raytheon, about 60% of students lose their interest in science before the age of 13. The study is just one that shows how students start elementary school genuinely excited about science. By the time they hit seventh grade, the majority feel that science is ?boring? and irrelevant to their lives.

Dave Wilson, director of academic programs at National Instruments, stated ?In order for students to remain engaged in math and science, they need to actually experience the theory that educators put before them. Bringing the theory to life through hands-on experiences really helps students understand and learn better and makes the concepts more relevant to them.? National Instruments is well known for its technical innovation and dedication to science and math education.

?Many science principles have been the same for hundreds of years.? says Robert Bourdelais of? Ward?s Natural Science. ?We are using 19th century methods to teach 21st century kids. Students today need to touch and feel science and learn by doing. A lecture environment doesn?t ?inspire today?s young students. ?The way we teach them needs to evolve and align with ever changing technology which is becoming the center of our modern world.?

It should be no surprise that presenting science in a dry, isolated context to today?s super stimulated kids results in students becoming more and more disconnected from how innovation is at the core of human existence. The irony of this belief is lost on the most wired generation in history.

It is a terrible irony that young people don?t believe science to be relevant to their lives when they are totally immersed in some of the most advanced technological innovation in the history of mankind. Even worse is the idea that any one of these kids has the potential to cure cancer, solve the energy problem or invent the next insanely great thing. Let?s just hope those kids are not in the 60% who fall through the cracks.

How Does Helping the Indigenous People of Nicaragua Help America?s Students?

According to world renowned paleontologist Dr. Jack Horner, ?I think it?s time to do away with traditional classrooms where information is simply disseminated to students who are then expected to regurgitate that same information.? We must now create environments where students have to think or create and solve problems or write using their imaginations in order to pass classes?? Horner says. ?We need to show kids that active participation in science is exciting and important while motivating them to have their own adventures instead of hearing it second-hand.?

Team XN: Expedition Central America is designed to inspire students to get actively involved in hands-on scientific study and show them how innovations in agriculture, renewable fuels, ethnobotany and medicine improve the living conditions of all people ? especially the impoverished.

The Rama Indians of the Mosquito Coast in Nicaragua are on the receiving end for the Expedition. ?We chose the Rama to illustrate what life would be like minus innovation.??says Dr. Alfredo Lopez Salazar, owner of the Rio Indio Lodge in Nicaragua and a long time supporter of the indigenous populations in Central America. Dr. Lopez continues, ?The Rama have a sophisticated tradition of thriving in the rain forest and an intimate knowledge of the plants and animals that surround them. But they currently struggle to fulfill their basic needs, such as medical care.?

Team XN: Expedition Central America

The team of kids and doctors will bring access to a wide range of medical procedures, basic drugs like antibiotics and analgesics as well as water purification and curriculum materials for the only school in the village.

The fourteen day trek through the jungle will include several stops to create a series of lesson programs for Exploration Nation on subjects ranging from sustainable tropical agriculture and renewable energy to ethnobotany and austere medicine. These lessons will include instructional materials and video for elementary and middle school students.

The Expedition is also broadcasting live to classrooms across the United States each day of the journey, free for any educators who want to follow the adventure as a learning experience for their students. The team is raising money for the expedition using a crowd funding strategy a growing trend in the scientific community.

Thirteen year old Exploration Nation host, Emma, states, ?I?m not sure what to expect. I guess the kids there won?t be much different from the kids here. They just don?t have as much stuff and when they get sick, they can?t go to the doctor. So we are bringing the doctors to them.?

Simon?s gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Simon?s gift picks: 2012 holiday gift guide

So, I?ve been drooling over connected home gadgets for the last couple of months. Now that the holidays are here, I can hold my love of friends and family hostage until they buy me these expensive presents, instead of just forlornly posting them to Pinterest. I kid! I would just as soon buy any of these for my parents if I had any inkling that they would actually use them. That said, if you've been having trouble finding a present for that someone who seems to have every techno-doodad on the planet, I think you'll find some helpful suggestions in this wishlist.

Nest Thermostat

Nest Thermostat has been around for awhile, but the second-generation model just came out in October, and it?s more awesome than ever. The Wi-Fi-connected device replaces your home?s usual thermostat, and lets you remotely control it from your iOS device. Though you can manually set timers, the real magic is in how Nest naturally learns your habits based on when you make adjustments, and when you leave the house. Although that sounds like it?s mostly just for convenience, the system also helps you save power by showing a little leaf when you?re being green.

Dropcam

Dropcam is a quick and easy home security system that lets you see what?s going on at home through an iOS app. The Dropcam units themselves plug into the home?s Wi-Fi, and have speakers built into them so they can be used as webcams in a pinch. There?s a cloud service available for the system that, with a subscription, enables owners to quickly look through event and activity history and quickly see stored video from those periods.

WeMo

WeMo is a great general home automation system. You plug these little thing into power sockets around your house, then plug your lights (or other electronics) into those units. You can then turn those appliances on and off from your phone, or, if you pick up the WeMo motion sensor, you can have them automatically turn on with certain triggers. As a bonus, WeMo has hooks for IFTTT, which means you can have a text message sent to your phone when that motion sensor goes off, for example.

  • $49.99 - WeMo Switch - Buy now
  • $99.99 - WeMo Switch and Motion Sensor- Buy now

Sonos

Sonos remains the de facto standard in connected home audio. They have a wide range of Wi-Fi enabled speakers with companion iOS app that not only provide quick access to your iTunes library, but also a bunch of popular streaming services. With the Sonos app, you can quickly shift music from one room to the next, control playback, and change the volume from your device.

Honorable mentions go out to a few projects that aren?t available yet, like Lockitron, Lifx, Kick, and Stick N Find.

Owner of Rivera plane investigated by DEA

PHOENIX (AP) ? The company that owns a luxury jet that crashed and killed Mexican pop superstar Jenni Rivera is under investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

It has had two planes seized by the agency this year.

DEA spokeswoman Lisa Webb Johnson confirms the planes owned by Las Vegas-based Starwood Management were seized in Texas and Arizona. She declined to discuss details.

The man widely believed to be behind the aviation company is an ex-convict named Christian Esquino who has a long and checkered legal past, including convictions for fraud, one as part of a sweeping drug investigation in Florida in the late 1980s.

The 43-year-old California-born Rivera died when the plane she was traveling in nose-dived into the ground while flying in Mexico Sunday morning.

HBT: Ichiro, Yanks finalize 2-year, $13M deal

UPDATE: Done deal. Heyman reports it?s a two-year, $13 million deal.

Thursday, 9:24 PM: Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that the two sides are close to finalizing a two-year deal worth between $12-13 million. Just the ?finishing touches? remain.

Thursday, 5:24 PM: Amid rumors that other teams have offered Ichiro Suzuki two-year deals Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the 39-year-old outfielder is expected to re-sign with the Yankees for $12-$13 million.

Heyman makes it sound like all but a done deal, writing that the two sides are ?still working on structure? before it can be official.

Calcaterra speculated this morning that the reports of two-year offers were an effort to get the Yankees to cave and give Suzuki two years, but it sounds like they?re sticking with the one-year commitment.
