UK Holds Pet Weight Loss Contest
Across the globe, the UK is battling its own problems with pet obesity. To combat this problem, an annual contest is held by the UK veterinary charity, People?s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). PDSA provides care for sick and injured animals of the needy. The charity had their annual Pet Fit Club that included 18 finalists which were obese. These consisted of 11 dogs, 5 cats, and 2 rabbits. When weighed together, they reached 336 pounds in excess weight. The PDSA veterinarians will provide support in advising the pet owners on how to get their furry companions fit and trim with special diets and regular exercise programs.
Dee Doyle, the owner of a cat called Maverick who was one of the finalists, stated that since she took in her pet cat who was a stray two years ago, her pet?s weight as ballooned. The extra weight the cat has put on has affected its overall health. Maverick is practically sleeping all the time and has trouble breathing. Doyle was so shocked to hear her vet say that Maverick was the biggest cat he?s ever seen.
Fifi, another feline contestant, weighed 21 pounds, She was considered to be double her ideal body weight, to think that she was malnourished when she was found by her owner, Monica Bottomley. Bottomley has expressed her frustration in having failed in all her attempts in getting Fifi to lose weight.
The PDSA wants to enlighten pet owners on the problems that come with obesity in pets. The competition will run until September and the winner will get a grand prize which is a stay at a Four Seasons hotel amounting to $800, and one year?s worth of pet food.
