HARARE, Zimbabwe ? State media loyal to Zimbabwe's president says he won't allow observers from Europe to monitor proposed elections to end the nation's troubled coalition government.
State radio reported Friday that President Robert Mugabe told the new British ambassador there was no place for Western observers as long as their nations enforced economic sanctions targeting him and his loyalists.
Western nations have imposed travel bans and a banking freeze on party leaders and businesses closely linked to them to protest years of human rights violations, election violence and alleged vote rigging under Mugabe's authoritarian control.
The British envoy presented her diplomatic credentials to Mugabe on Thursday. Mugabe expelled a European Union observer group in 2002, the last Western polling monitors, apart from Harare-based diplomats.
