Tonga Earthquake 2011: Magnitude-6.2 Quake Hits Tonga

NEW YORK -- A magnitude-6.2 earthquake rattled the island nation of Tonga in the South Pacific on Friday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The 12:07 p.m. Friday (2307 GMT Thursday) quake was 8.6 kilometers (5.3 miles) below the surface, the USGS said.

The USGS said the quake was some 382 kilometers (238 miles) northwest of Neiafu,Tonga.
